Merei Tölegenuly Aqschalow ( Kazakh Мерей Төлегенұлы Ақшалов , Russian Мерей Толегенович Акшалов , Merei Tolegenowitsch Akschalow ; born June 9, 1989 in Astana ) is a Kazakh amateur. He became world light welterweight champion in 2013 .

Boxing career

In 2007 Aqschalow appeared for the first time at the World Championships in Chicago , where he started in the lightweight. In the preliminary round, he was only just able to prevail against Issouf Kinda from Burkina Faso before he was outdone by Frankie Gavin from England in the second preliminary round . For this he won the Asian Olympic qualification in the domestic Astana in 2008 after he had defeated the lightweight Daijirō Hoshi from Japan , Genebert Basadre from the Philippines and Asilbek Talasbajew from Kyrgyzstan . At the subsequent Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008 he was able to beat the Hungarian Miklós Varga 12: 3, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Chinese Hu Qing 7:11.

In 2010 he won the World Military Championships at Camp Lejeune , a US Marine Corps base in North Carolina. He beat the American Jamal Herring in the final.

In 2012 he won the Kazakh Championships light welterweight and could in March 2013 and the Chemie Pokal tournament of Halle decide for themselves; he defeated Petros Ananijan from Russia , Enchsorig Sorigtbaatar from Mongolia , Dmitri Galagot from Moldova and Artem Harutiunian from Germany .

In July 2013 he competed at the Asian Championships in Amman , was able to prevail against Ali Mazafar from Kuwait , Li Quanlong from China, Ermek Sakenow from Kyrgyzstan and Urantschimegiin Mönch-Erdene from Mongolia and won the gold medal in the light welterweight division. In this weight class he started in October 2013 at the World Championships in Almaty . He beat Josh Taylor from Scotland in the preliminary round, Carlos Adames from the Dominican Republic in the round of 16, Ermek Sakenow from Kyrgyzstan in the quarter-finals, Éverton Lopes from Brazil in the semifinals and Yasniel Toledo from Cuba in the final .
