Josh Taylor (born January 2, 1991 in Edinburgh ) is a Scottish professional boxer and current IBF and WBA world light welterweight champion . He is ranked number 1 in the world by Ring Magazine (January 2020), was voted Boxer of the Year by the British Professional Boxing Association in 2018 and won the World Boxing Super Series tournament in 2018/19 .

As an amateur, he was an Olympic lightweight competitor in 2012 and a 2014 Commonwealth Games winner in the light welterweight division.

Amateur career

Josh Taylor is around 1.78 m tall, started boxing at the age of 15 and trained as an amateur at Lochend ABC in Edinburgh under Terry McCormack. He won the bronze medal at the British Cadet Championships in 2007 and the silver medal at the British Youth Championships in 2008. In October 2008 he won another bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India .

In the elite class (adults) he was 2010 British runner-up in the lightweight, reached 5th place at the Commonwealth Championships in New Delhi and 2nd place at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi; he was only defeated in the final against Thomas Stalker . In 2011 he was British runner-up in the light welterweight division and took part in the European Championships in Ankara , where he was eliminated in the second preliminary round against Domenico Valentino . In September 2011 he started at the World Championships in Baku , but lost his first fight there against the eventual world champion Danijar Jeleussinow .

In 2012 he won 3rd place in the European Olympic qualification in Trabzon and then took part in the lightweight at the Summer Olympics in London . After a preliminary round win against Robson Conceição from Brazil, he lost again in the round of 16 against the Italian Domenico Valentino .

In 2013 he competed at the European Championships in Minsk and the World Championships in Almaty , but had bad luck in the draw and lost in the opening rounds to the later gold medalists Armen Sakarjan and Merei Aqschalow .

From July to August 2014 he took part in the light welterweight division at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and secured the gold medal after winning Kagiso Bagwasi from Botswana (3-0), Richarno Colin from Mauritius (3-0), Zack Davies from Wales (3rd : 0), Sam Maxwell from England (3: 0) and Jonas Junias from Namibia (3: 0).

Professional career

On July 18, 2015, he made his professional debut under the English promoter Cyclone Promotions in Texas, USA, and won against Archie Weah early in the second round. In October 2016, he became the Commonwealth Light Welterweight Champion. In July 2017 he also won the WBC Silver title through an early win against the unbeaten Ohara Davies (15-0). In a title defense, he beat Miguel Vázquez (39-5) by knockout in November 2017 . In March 2018 he defeated Winston Campos (30-3) early in the third round.

In a final WBC World Cup elimination match on June 23, 2018, he defeated Wiktor Postol (29-1) unanimously on points. In the same month it was announced that Josh Taylor would take part in the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) 2018/19 boxing tournament . In the first fight of the world series on November 3, 2018, he defeated Ryan Martin (22-0) by TKO in the seventh round. In the WBSS semi-final fight on May 18, 2019, he met IBF World Champion Ivan Barantschyk (19-0) and defeated the Belarusian unanimously on points. He became the new IBF title holder and moved into the WBSS final. In this, on October 26, 2019, he defeated the US WBA World Champion Regis Prograis (24-0) on points, thus securing the WBSS tournament victory and the WBA title of his opponent.
