World Boxing Super Series

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World Boxing Super Series (WBSS for short) is a boxing tournament that was launched by promoter Kalle Sauerland . It is organized by Comosa AG .

In addition to high prize money, the winners of the tournament receive the Muhammad Ali Trophy created by the Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga , which is named after the boxer Muhammad Ali ; Ali's daughter Laila Ali gave her consent. Among other things, Gazzaniga designed the FIFA World Cup trophy in 1971 , which has been presented to the soccer world champions since 1974 .

In this tournament, which is intended to initiate a redesign of boxing, eight boxers per weight class compete against each other in the knockout system . There are no rematches, the losers are eliminated. The battles take place on a global scale in different places. As usual in professional boxing , they are set for 12 rounds of 3 minutes each.

In contrast to the Super Six tournament , which took place from October 2009 to December 2011 and from which the American Andre Ward emerged as the winner, there is a group of boxers who are permanently available as replacements - even in the event of unexpected failures on the evening of the fight to step in. This ensured in season 1 that there would be a winner in each of the two weight classes in May 2018. However, this concept could not be fully implemented - while the final fight in the cruiserweight division was postponed to July 2018, the final fight in the super middleweight division took place at the end of September 2018.

The first season 2017/18 was held in two weight classes, the second in 2018/19 in three weight classes.

Season 1 (2017-2018)

In season 1 the following weight classes were represented: cruiserweight , super middleweight .

On October 21, 2017 Murat Gassijew competed against Krzysztof Włodarczyk in the Prudential Center in Newark , the largest city in the US state of New Jersey , and won the third round by a classic knockout. This fight was the final quarterfinals in the cruiserweight division.

Ussyk was the first finalist. In the Arena Riga in Riga , the Ukrainian southpaw won on January 27, 2018 by majority decision. Two judges each scored 115: 113 for Ussyk, while the third scored 114: 114 on the score sheet. This result was quite surprising due to the comparatively high knockout rate of both boxers. Briedis managed to get started strong; he was more decisive in the first six rounds. Ussyk started to catch up in the second half of the fight; he hit more, hit more, occupied Briedis with his enormously strong jab and could thus corner the Latvian.

On February 3, 2018, the second and last fight for the final between Gassiev and Dorticos was held in the multifunctional arena Bolshoi Ice Palace in Sochi , Russia . Gassiev, who went into the fight as the favorite, lived up to his role. He landed the clearer hits, was superior in boxing and had too good double coverage that Dorticos could not get past. In lap 11 Dorticos was hit after a hit. The knockout came in the next and final round. Gassiev initially sent Dorticos to the ground twice before the fight was abandoned after the third knockdown.

The final match took place in the Moscow Olympic Stadium on July 21, 2018 between Ussyk and Gassiev. With a "masterpiece" according to the media, Ussyk won unanimously and high on points (120: 108, 119: 109, 119: 109). Gassiev was able to land a few effective hits, but Ussyk was more variable and hit more often, towards the end with combinations of strokes. Ussyk won the world championship belt from all major associations.

Eubank, who went into the fight as the clear favorite with all bookmakers and almost all experts, lived up to his role when he knocked out Yıldırım with a brutal left hook in round 3. The referee stopped the fight immediately.

George Groves and Jamie Cox met in the third quarter-finals at Wembley Arena in London on October 14, 2017. Groves went into the duel as the clear favorite and won in round 4 with a body hook through classic knockout.

With a strong tactical and technical performance, Groves defeated Eubank by a unanimous decision of the judges despite a dislocated shoulder. Decisive for this victory was Groves' leading hand, with which he could dominate Eubank and take the decisive actions.

In the second semi-final, Nieky Holzken from the Netherlands replaced Jürgen Brähmer , who had a flu-like infection, and competed against Callum Smith. The fight took place in the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung in Nuremberg on February 24, 2018. Holzken (former Muay Thai fighter and kickboxer ) sold better than most experts expected, he almost always went forward with a strong cover in order to tune in and get clear hits, which he also did one or the other time succeeded. However, it was not enough to win. As expected, Smith won clearly, he won by a unanimous decision of the judges. Holzken showed outstanding ability to take and survived the fight without precipitation.

Unexpectedly, the final between the two Britons Groves and Smith took place in the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium , Jeddah , Saudi Arabia , on September 28, 2018. Smith won by classic knockout in the 7th round and thus the Ali Trophy in the super middleweight division.
