Mairis Briedis (* 13. January 1985 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian professional boxer and former world champion of the WBC in the cruiserweight division .

Career

Briedis became a professional cruiserweight in 2009. He is now also fighting in the heavyweight division. In November 2013, he won the vacant IBA cruiserweight title when he defeated the Czech Luboš Šuda . In his next fight on July 26, 2014, he secured the WBC Baltic Cruiserweight title, which was also vacant , before defending his IBA title in November of the same year against the experienced Belgian Ismaïl Abdoul . In February 2016, after a fight against the South African Danie Venter, he won the vacant IBF Inter-Continental cruiserweight title, previously held by the Russian Gassiev . Against Olanrewaju Durodola, he also won the WBC silver cruiserweight title in May 2016.

On April 1, 2017, he defeated Marco Huck unanimously on points in the fight for the vacant WBC cruiserweight title.

In the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Super Series , he defeated Mike Perez from Cuba, who had been selected by him and who had switched from heavyweight to cruiserweight, unanimously on points. So he defended his title and got into the semifinals, in which he was defeated by WBO world champion Oleksandr Ussyk .
