Murat Georgijewitsch Gassijew ( Russian Мурат Георгиевич Гассиев , Ossetian Гасситы Георгийы фырт Мурат * 12. October 1993 in Vladikavkaz , North Ossetia-Alania , Russia ) is a Russian professional boxer in the cruiserweight and former world champion of the organizations IBF and WBA ( Unified Champion ). He is a normal boom and has been trained by Abel Sanchez , who also trains Gennadi Golowkin , since 2014 .

Amateur career

Iron , as Gassiev's fight name was, had a very short career with the amateurs , consisting of only 25 fights.

Professional career

Gassiev, who is considered to be powerful, made his professional debut in Moscow on September 12, 2009 with a points win. At the end of June 2013 he won the vacant WBC Youth World title in a fight against Levan Dschomardashvili , which he defended in December of the same year against the Croat Ivica Bacurin in a 10-round battle by unanimous decision. On February 1, 2014, he defeated the Belgian Ismail Abdoul on points and thereby secured the IBF East / West Europe title .

At the end of August of the same year he defeated the previously undefeated Leon Harth by knockout and at the end of October of the same year Engin Karakaplan also by knockout and thus secured the intercontinental belt of the IBF association. Gassiev defended this title on April 17th of the following year against Felix Cora . On May 17th the following year, he competed against Jordan Shimmell in a non-title fight, which was scheduled for 12 rounds, and won round 1 by classic knockout.

At the beginning of December 2016, Gassiev fought against Denis Lebedev for the world championship belt of the IBF association and won by split judges' decision (116: 112, 113: 114, 116: 111). In this fight Lebedev went down after a liver hook and was counted.

World Boxing Super Series

By defeating Lebedev, Gassiev qualified for the World Boxing Super Series (WBSS). There he met Poland's Krzysztof Włodarczyk in the quarter-finals on October 21, 2017 at the Prudential Center in Newark , New Jersey , USA . On February 3, 2018, he also won the WBA world championship title in the WBSS semifinals through an early win against Yunier Dorticos .

On July 21, 2018, Gassiev lost unanimously on points to the Ukrainian Oleksandr Ussyk in the Muhammad Ali Trophy Series (Sauerland Stall) in Moscow . Especially in the last few laps it became obvious that Gassiev had no chance against the strong Ussyk.
