Marco Huck (born November 11, 1984 as Muamer Hukić in Ugao , Sjenica municipality , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a German professional boxer and former WBO world cruiserweight champion .

Origin and private matters

Huck comes from a family from Ugao in the municipality of Sjenica in Sandžak in southern Serbia . In 1993 the family moved to Germany, where they initially settled in the Brackwede district of Bielefeld . Huck has two younger siblings and one older sister. He lived in Berlin and has had German citizenship since August 2009 . He has lived in Novi Pazar since 2013 , where he wants to build up a second mainstay in the real estate industry . He is married and has two children.

Amateur and kickboxers

Before his professional career, Huck was a kickboxer and trained with Ulf Schmidt at the Bielefeld Sports Palace. At the age of 16 he became European champion in kickboxing. At the age of 18 he also became the youngest kickboxing world champion of a German team at the 2003 WAKO World Championship in Paris . He then switched to boxing, where he trained at BC Vorwärts Bielefeld and was able to win each of his 15 amateur fights.

Professional boxer since 2004

In 2004, Huck decided to become a professional and attended the training of the Sauerland team , where he proved himself in the sparring against Cengiz Koç . In 2004 he became a professional cruiserweight in Wilfried Sauerland's boxing stable under coach Ulli Wegner . He made his professional debut on November 7th, 2004 with a technical knockout victory in the first round against the Czech Pavel Cirok. After nine more knockout victories against opponents who were built up , he won unanimously on points against Rüdiger May on September 3, 2005 and three months later also unanimously against the US amateur world champion from 1999, Michael Simms .

In January 2006, Huck won by knockout in the seventh round against the Romanian Claudio Rasco, vice European champion of the amateurs 2000 and bronze winner of the amateur world championship in 2001. After three more victories, including on points against the Albanian Nuri Seferi (later European champion of the WBO ) and by knockout against Rachid El Hadak (later EBA European Champion), he boxed on December 16, 2006 in Kempten (Allgäu) for the EU cruiserweight title of the EBU . His opponent in the fight for the vacant title was the Italian southpaw Pietro Aurino, former European champion of the EBU and already two-time World Cup challenger. The fight, which was fiery and very unclean from both sides from the beginning, ended in the second round controversially: There was a scuffle that the referee tried in vain to stop. After two deliberate headbuttings by Aurino, Huck returned the favor with a knee kick that didn't hit the Italian fully. After the boxers separated, the referee deducted two points from Aurino and felt that he was at a disadvantage because Huck was not punished for kicking his knee. Aurino briefly left the ring angry and disqualified himself according to the rules of the EBU; later the fight was rated as a technical knockout .

After a subsequent title defense in Switzerland against the Belgian Ismail Abdoul and a winning title elimination match against the undefeated Russian Vadim Tokarew , Huck received the challenge right against the reigning IBF world champion Steve Cunningham from the USA . On December 29, 2007, however, Huck had to admit defeat to the defending champion in Bielefeld; Huck was only the more active man in the first two rounds and his stamina collapsed towards the end of the fight, and he had to take more and more heavy hits. In the twelfth round, Huck's corner of the ring had an appreciation and threw in the towel during another blow attack by Cunningham, which Huck already seemed exposed to defenseless.

In February 2008, Huck finally separated from Ulli Wegner in order to be trained by Manfred Wolke from now on. In April, however, Huck returned to Wegner because, as he himself said, "there is no point in finding the blame for failures on others."

On May 17, 2008, Huck fought in the Upper Franconian Hall in Bayreuth against František Kasanič from Slovakia and won the fight in the ninth round by technical knockout. In this fight, Huck worked much more level-headed and concentrated than before. After a straight straight from his opponent, he had to box with a broken jaw from the third lap. Despite this injury, Huck got back in the ring on September 20, 2008 and defeated the reigning European champion Jean-Marc Monrose in the twelfth round by technical knockout, making him the new European champion of the EBU. On October 25, 2008 he met the Italian Fabio Tuiach in Oldenburg and won by technical knockout in round 2.

A title defense against the Russian Valeri Brudow in Riesa was planned for January 24, 2009, but he had to cancel the fight a fortnight beforehand. The previously undefeated Belgian Geoffrey Battelo was signed as a replacement, against whom Huck won by technical knockout seconds before the end of the third round. On May 9, 2009, Marco Huck took on the EBU defending champion in Bamberg against the previously undefeated Ukrainian Vitaly Rusal. He was able to defeat his opponent in the fifth round with a technical knockout. On August 29, 2009, Huck finally won the WBO cruiserweight world championship unanimously on points in Halle (Westphalia) against the Argentine and reigning world champion Victor Emilio Ramírez . His first title defense he denied on December 5, 2009 in Ludwigsburg against Ola Afolabi and won unanimously on points. This was followed by a voluntary title defense against the American Adam Richards on March 13, 2010 in Berlin. Huck won by a series of punches after Richards had suffered a cut in the back of the head , by knockout in the third round.

On May 1, 2010, he defended his title against the American Brian Minto , who competed in the cruiserweight division for the first time in his professional career. Minto went down three times in rounds 3 and 5. At the end of the ninth round, he finally gave up the fight in a bad way and then had to be treated in hospital. On August 21, 2010, Huck defended the title in Erfurt with a technical knockout in the fifth round against the North American champion Matt Godfrey, who had nothing to oppose Huck. On December 18, 2010, Huck met the undefeated Russian Denis Lebedew in the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin . He suffered a rib fracture in the fourth lap, but had his opponent on the ground in the fifth lap and scored points with aggressive attacks against the technically superior Russian. After the full twelve rounds, Huck was declared the 2-1 point winner, not without controversy, and thus defended his title for the fifth time in a row.

Huck also unanimously defeated the undefeated Israeli Ran Nakash, who could only win two of the twelve rounds and had to take a lot, on April 2, 2011 on points. On July 16, 2011, he defended his title after initial difficulties by knockout in round 10 against the Argentine and former WBA light heavyweight champion Hugo Hernán Garay . Garay went down once in the first round; In round 3, Huck was punished with a point deduction for hitting the back of his opponent's head. On October 22, 2011, he boxed against the Argentine Rogelio Omar Rossi . In the unclean fight, Rossi was punished for low blows in the third round with a point deduction. Huck also received two point deductions for hits after the round gong, but scored two knockdowns against Rossi in the fifth round and won by knockout in the sixth round.

On February 25, 2012, Marco Huck boxed in the Stuttgart Porsche Arena for the regular WBA world heavyweight title against Alexander Povetkin , who had won the vacant title after Wladimir Klitschko was named WBA superchampion. Due to a narrow defeat on points, Huck missed the opportunity to become the second German heavyweight world champion after Max Schmeling . The verdict was controversial, because Huck had his opponent several times on the verge of knockout defeat.

After the fight, Huck had to decide within ten days whether he wanted to keep his WBO world cruiserweight title or continue boxing in the top weight class. He decided to return to the cruiserweight division. The WBO title defense against Ola Afolabi on May 5, 2012 in Erfurt went over twelve rounds and ended in a draw; thus Marco Huck remained world champion. On November 3, 2012, Huck defended his title in Halle (Westphalia) against the former WBA cruiserweight champion Firat Arslan . He won this fight by an, albeit controversial, unanimous decision on points (115: 113, 115: 113, 117: 111).

On June 8, 2013, he played a third duel against Ola Afolabi, which he won by majority decision on points. The cruiserweight championship fight between Huck and his challenger Firat Arslan on September 14, 2013 in Stuttgart was canceled at short notice by Huck for health reasons. The fight finally took place on January 25, 2014. In the sixth round, the referee stopped the fight after Arslan had been down twice. His second fight in 2014 rose on August 30, 2014 in the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle (Westphalia) against the Italian Mirko Larghetti, which Huck won on points (116: 112, 116: 112, 118: 110). A few months after his victory, Huck announced in October 2014 that he would not renew his contract with Sauerland Event .

On August 14, 2015 he lost his WBO world champion belt by knocking out in the 11th round in the Prudential Center in Newark (New Jersey) against the Poland Krzysztof Głowacki .

Huck got another World Cup chance on February 27, 2016 in the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle (Westphalia) against IBO world champion Ola Afolabi , whom he defeated by giving up in the 10th round. His first IBO title defense should take place on September 24, 2016 in the Frankfurt Festhalle against the Briton Ovill McKenzie. However, McKenzie canceled the fight at short notice (four days before the fight) due to illness. As a substitute, he met Ukrainian Dmytro Kutscher on November 19, 2016 in the TUI Arena in Hanover , whom he defeated unanimously on points after 12 rounds despite a fracture of the metacarpal bone in the 4th round (117: 111, 119: 109 , 117: 111).

On the instructions of the WBC, on April 1, 2017, the title unification against the mandatory challenger of the WBC, Mairis Briedis, took place in the Dortmund Westfalenhallen . Huck lost the fight unanimously on points (111: 116, 110: 117, 109: 118) and had to give up his IBO belt.

As a participant in the World Boxing Super Series , he met WBO world champion Oleksandr Ussyk in the quarter-finals in Berlin's Max-Schmeling-Halle on September 9, 2017 . Here he was defeated by a technical knockout in the tenth round.

In October 2017, Huck announced that he would try again in the heavyweight division. He fought his first heavyweight fight on June 16, 2018 in the Ballhausforum in Unterschleißheim against the German-Turkish Yakup Saglam. He won the fight after two knockdowns by a technical knockout in the fourth round. Almost a year later, on May 17, 2019, he boxed in Connecticut against the American Nick Guivas. This fight ended after the eighth round and was declared invalid due to an accidental foul.

At the instruction of the EBU , after long negotiations, the European championship fight against the current European champion Joe Joyce from Great Britain should finally take place on January 11, 2020 in the TUI Arena in Hanover . However, this fight had to be canceled due to Huck's hand injury.

Hucks boxing style

Huck's boxing style is very offensive, explosive and aggressive, which always results in situations in which he is completely open to counter attacks. Huck is easily irritated and then falls into hasty, unclean actions.
