Rüdiger May (born November 26, 1974 in Meerane ) is a German boxer. He is the brother of Torsten May .

professional

After 55 wins in 76 amateur fights, Rüdiger May turned pro in 1994 at the age of 19. He played his first professional fight on February 26, 1994 in San José . After 24 victories against opponents who were building up , he won the German cruiserweight championship title on September 4, 1999 by winning points over Silvio Meinel. In his next fight, he suffered his first defeat in Ciudad Real, Spain, against Turan Bağcı, losing to the Turks on points.

In the following years he defended the title of German champion against Michael Klötzsch and Firat Arslan , before he got the opportunity on December 1, 2001 to box against the Ukrainian Alexander Gurow for the European championship. Gurow had previously won the belt from May's brother Torsten. But even Rüdiger May had no chance against Gurow and lost due to a technical knockout in the fourth round.

In a fight for the international German championship against Alexander Petković, he boxed in 2002 in a draw. On March 15, 2003, he won the vacant EU championship title by defeating the Frenchman Frédéric Serrat. He defended this belt three times before getting his second chance to fight for the European Championship. May managed a draw against reigning European champion Vincenzo Cantatore on June 5, 2004. But that was enough for the Italian to defend his title.

Subsequently, his promoter Wilfried Sauerland enabled him to fight a world championship against WBO title holder Johnny Nelson , but May missed the chance and was defeated by Nelson by technical knockout in the seventh round.

In April 2005 May fought against Poland's Krzysztof Włodarczyk for the EU title, but failed by knockout in the tenth round. Because of the alleged lack of prospects in professional boxing, his promoter Sauerland let him compete in a “stable duel” against the up-and-coming and then undefeated Marco Huck in September 2005 , May lost over ten laps on points.

After two years of abstinence from the ring, Rüdiger May finally celebrated a successful comeback in boxing on March 31, 2007. In the framework of the rematch fight between Henry Maske and Virgil Hill , he defeated Sven Haselhuhn from Halle with a technical knockout in the sixth round. He has been under contract with Arena Box-Promotion since October 2007 . Since then he has completed two fights that he could win. On March 11, 2008, he faced Herbie Hide , the WBC International Cruiserweight title holder. He lost to the powerful Hide by a technical knockout in the second round.

Together with his brother May runs the MayLife boxing school in Cologne .
