The Gymnolaemata form a class of bog animals (Ectoprocta, also known as Bryozoa), which occurs in salt water ( marine ) and fresh water (limnic). This class includes two orders , the Ctenostomata , with approx. 50 genera , and the Cheilostomata , with approx. 600 genera.

construction

The mostly marine Gymnolaemata form the most species-rich class with around 650 genera. The cystids are usually box or cornucopia-shaped. The animals of the colony are separated by partitions with pores filled with tissue. There are no body wall muscles. The Gymnolaemata are again divided into two orders: The walls of the Ctenostomata (approx. 50 genera) are membranous or gelatinous. They have no ooecia or avicularia. The cystid closure is achieved by folding a membranous collar and the individual animals are largely isolated. The walls of the cheilostomata (approx. 600 genera) are calcified and the cystid has a lid closure. Heterozoids are common and embryonic development takes place in brood chambers.
