George James Allman (* 1812 in Cork , Ireland , † November 24, 1898 in Ardmore, Parkstone , Dorset ) was an Irish biologist and university professor . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " GJAllman ".

Life

Allman attended the Royal Academical Institution in Belfast . For a while he studied law, but gave it up in favor of studying natural history . In 1843 he received his medical doctorate in Dublin . In 1844 he became professor of botany at the University of Dublin ; his predecessor there William Allman (1776-1846) had the same surname as him. About twelve years later he became Regius Professor of Natural History at the University of Edinburgh . In 1870 he took early retirement for health reasons, which he spent in Dorsetshire ; henceforth he devoted himself to horticulture , his greatest hobby.

In 1854 Allman was elected as a member (" Fellow ") in the Royal Society , which in 1873 awarded him the Royal Medal . In 1856 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1896 he was awarded the Linné Medal of the Linnean Society of London . For several years he was President of the Linnaean Society.

Works

Allman published numerous works. His most important work is his monograph on hydroids , published from 1871 to 1872 . Allman himself enriched this very detailed work with valuable drawings from his own hand.
