description

Vegetative characteristics

Asimina longifolia grows as a deciduous, relatively small shrub and reaches heights of 1 to 1.5 (rarely up to 1.75) meters. The branches are stiff upright to arched or spread out. The bark of the branches is red-brown to yellow-brown and bare. The leaf buds are 2 to 4 mm in size.

The alternately arranged leaves are divided into petioles and leaf blades. The petiole is the ascending-spreading, leathery leaf blade with a length of mostly 5 to 15 (to 20) cm linear-elliptical to narrow spatulate or linear-inverted-lanceolate with broad to narrow wedge-shaped or narrowed blade base as well as pointed, blunt or rounded The End. The leaf margin is slightly to very strongly curled upwards. The leaf upper side is glabrous and the leaf underside is glabrous and raised-reticulate.

Generative characteristics

The flowers stand individually on bare, slender, 2 to 4 cm long stems in the leaf axils of young branches. There are one or two hairy bracts, which are lanceolate-linear with a length of 10 mm. The nodding, fragrant flowers are hermaphrodite. The mostly three, rarely up to six bald sepals are elliptical to ovate with a length of 0.5 to 1 cm. The outer petals are spread out, with a length of 3 to 8 cm elliptical, oblong or obovate, and usually white to cream-colored or rarely pink or red and pink striped. The inner petals are upright with a spread tip, at most half as long as the outer, chestnut-colored to cherry-red or white and elongated to lanceolate. There are usually two to seven, rarely up to twelve stamps.

The 4 to 10 cm large berries turn yellow-green when ripe. The dark brown, shiny seeds are 1 to 2 cm in size.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
