Alexander Gurov ( Ukrainian Олександр Гуров / Oleksandr Hurow * 7. April 1971 in Mariupol , Ukrainian SSR ) is a retired Ukrainian professional boxer in the cruiserweight division , four-time EBU European champion and two-time world title challenger of the WBA .

Amateur career

Alexander Gurow won 79 of 85 fights as an amateur. He was winner of the Canada Cup in 1992 and participant in the 1993 World Championships in Finland .

Professional career

In March 1993 he played his first professional fight and won his first EBU title on January 17, 1995, when he defeated the Cameroon-born Frenchman Norbert Ekassi (balance: 22-4) by TKo in the first round. Although he lost the title on March 14, 1995 by knockout in the third round to the unbeaten Frenchman Patrice Aouissi (14-0), he won the rematch and thus the title on October 24, 1995 by knockout the fifth round back.

On February 22, 1997, he boxed in Florida for the WBA World Championship, but lost the fight by technical knockout in the second round against Nate Miller (29-4).

On February 14, 1998 he was knocked down in another EBU fight by Briton Terry Dunstan (16-0) in one of the fastest wins in boxing history after just five seconds of the first round and then counted by the referee.

He did not play his next big fight again until April 21, 2001 in Erfurt , when he defeated the German Torsten May (22-2) by TKo in the eighth round and thus became EBU European champion for the third time. He was able to defend the title on December 1, 2001 in Dortmund by TKo in the fourth round against Rüdiger May (32-1).

On March 1, 2003, he fought again in Las Vegas for the WBA title, but was defeated by Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck (28-2) by TKo in the eighth round. With a TKo win in the second round against Vincenzo Rossitto (28-2) he became European champion for the fourth time, but lost his first title defense on December 16, 2005 by knockout in the first round against David Haye (14 -1).

In another EBU fight on June 22, 2007, he lost just on points against the Italian Vincenzo Cantatore (32-4). He played his last fight in October 2012 and won by knockout in the first round against Edson Borges (22-0).
