Jean-Marc Mormeck (born June 3, 1972 in Pointe-à-Pitre , Guadeloupe ) is a former French boxer and former WBA and WBC world cruiserweight champion .

Professional career

Mormeck turned professional light heavyweight in 1995 and has already lost two of his first five fights on points. His first success was winning the French light heavyweight championship in November 1998.

From 2001 he boxed in the cruiserweight division. On February 23, 2002 he challenged the WBA title holder Virgil Hill in Marseille . He dominated the American and eventually got him to give up the fight after the eighth round. Hill also tested positive for steroids afterwards. After two title defenses, there was a rematch with Hill in South Africa in May 2004 , which Mormeck also won, even if only just on points.

Then he strove to unite the important titles in the weight class. On April 2, 2005 he was able to secure the WBC title by winning points against the undefeated Wayne Braithwaite from Guyana . His next opponent was then on January 7, 2006 in Madison Square Garden the Jamaican O'Neil Bell , who was in possession of the IBF belt. After a fairly even fight, Mormeck was knocked out in the tenth round.

The rematch with Bell for the WBA and WBC titles took place on March 17, 2007 in France and was won by Mormeck on points. However, he lost his title on November 10, 2007 in France by technical knockout in round seven to David Haye , after he had this on the ground in the fourth round. After the fight, Mormeck temporarily ended his career.

On December 18, 2009 he successfully returned to the boxing ring, this time in the heavyweight division. In his first fight in this weight class, he defeated the American Vinny Maddalone in eight rounds on points. On May 6, 2010 followed a narrow, controversial victory on points against Fres Oquendo , and on December 2, 2010 Mormeck was the new international champion of the WBA by a point victory against Timur Ibragimov .

Mormeck was then committed as an opponent for a voluntary title defense of WBA, WBO and IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko on December 10, 2011 in the Düsseldorf ESPRIT arena . Since Klitschko had to cancel the fight because of renal colic, he was rescheduled on March 3, 2012. Mormeck, who at this point had not played a fight for 15 months, was clearly inferior to the highly favored Klitschko, had to go down for the first time in the second round and lost in the fourth round by knockout.

Mormeck played his last professional fight on December 6, 2014 against Mateusz Masternak from Poland . He lost after 10 rounds unanimously on points.
