Mateusz Masternak (* 2. May 1987 in Iwaniska ) is a Polish professional boxer in the cruiserweight division . It is ranked 6th by the WBA and WBO associations , and 8th by the WBC in their world rankings.
Amateur career
Mateusz Masternak was Polish junior middleweight champion in 2005, won the Baltic Sea Youth Games in 2005 and was quarter-finalist of the 2005 European Junior Championships. In 2006, he was Polish runner-up in the light heavyweight division.
Professional career
Mateusz Masternak, trained by Andrzej Gmitruk and Piotr Wilczewski , made his professional debut on June 3, 2006 in Ostrołęka . Until October 2013 he remained unbeaten in 30 fights, including the amateur world champion Michael Simms , as well as the undefeated boxers Łukasz Janik (15-0), Lewan Jomardaschwili (20-0) and David Quiñonero (27-0).
On December 15, 2012 he won the EBU European Cruiserweight Championship in Nuremberg by unanimous decision on points against the Finn Juho Haapoja, but lost the belt on October 5, 2013 in his first title defense to the Russian Grigori Drosd .
On June 21, 2014 he was defeated in Monte Carlo in the fight for the interim world championship of the WBA cruiserweight just on points against Youri Kalenga . At this point he was already ranked 9th by Ring Magazine and 6th in the world rankings by the WBA. In December 2014 he beat the Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck , but surprisingly lost to the South African Johnny Muller in June 2015, although he had him twice on the ground.
In another fight for the EBU European Championship on December 12, 2015, he lost on points to Tony Bellew . In June 2017, however, he won unanimously against Ismajil Sillach , and in April 2018 prematurely against Youri Kalenga , which made him WBO European cruiserweight champion.
In October 2018 he lost to Yunier Dorticos on points .
