Tony Bellew (* thirtieth November 1982 in Liverpool ) is a former British professional boxer and former world champion of the WBC in the cruiserweight division .
Career
Tony Bellew was used as an amateur in international competitions and international tournaments, won the English heavyweight championships three times in 2004-2006 and participated in the 2006 European championships in Bulgaria . In one of his amateur fights, he beat Artur Szpilka .
He started his professional career in 2007 and won 16 fights in a row, 10 of them prematurely. He was 2010 Commonwealth Light Heavyweight Champion and was able to defend the title three times. In 2011 he was also British Champion . He boxed unbeaten in October 2011 for the WBO world light heavyweight title, but lost just on points against title holder Nathan Cleverly .
By beating former European champion Danny McIntosh , Bellew was again British champion and also secured the WBC international championship against Edison Miranda . After defeating the Argentine Roberto Bolonti in the fight for the silver title of the WBC and defending the belt twice against the South African Isaac Chilemba , he received another world championship chance in the light heavyweight division in November 2013. In this fight for the WBC title, however, he lost to Adonis Stevenson .
With considerable successive victories against Valeri Brudow, Júlio Santos and Nathan Cleverly , among others , he kept one of the top places in the rankings. In December 2015, he won the European Cruiserweight Championship with a unanimous victory over Mateusz Masternak on points .
Bellew made his acting debut in the 2015 sports drama Creed - Rocky's Legacy . He played the Liverpool boxing champion "Pretty" Ricky Conlan, who often shows himself in the film with jerseys from the local soccer club Everton . This is a reference to the fact that Bellew herself is a big fan of this club.
On May 29, 2016 he defeated the South African Ilunga Makabu by TKo in the third round in the fight for the vacant WBC title. In October he succeeded in defending his title against Benjamin Flores for the first time.
After moving to the heavyweight division in March 2017, he was named Emeritus Cruiserweight Champion by the WBC . When he returned to cruiserweight he was given the opportunity to compete against the current world champion in this weight class. On March 4, 2017, he surprisingly won a heavyweight match early in the eleventh round against David Haye , the former heavyweight and cruiser world champion of various associations. On May 5, 2018, he also won the rematch against David Haye early in the fifth round.
On November 10, 2018, he boxed for all four major associations (IBF, WBA, WBO, WBC) in the cruiserweight division, but lost by knockout in the eighth round against Oleksandr Ussyk . After this fight, Bellew announced the end of his career.
