Nathan Cleverly (born February 17, 1987 in Caerphilly , Wales ) is a former British professional boxer and former WBO and WBA world light heavyweight champion.

Career

As an amateur boxer, he had a record of 32 wins with only four defeats. His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 4 Nation Championships , which was played between the best boxers from Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland.

Cleverly boxed against strong opponents from the start to quickly climb up the rankings. He completed his first professional fight on July 23, 2005 against the experienced in 100 professional fights Ernie Smith and won on points. In his second fight he also won on points against Midlands champion Darren Gethin. On October 14, 2006 he won by technical knockout in round 5 against the undefeated, later British champion Tony Quigley. On July 21, 2007 followed a knockout victory in round 6 over the multiple Ghana champions Ayitey Powers.

On October 10, 2008, he won the Commonwealth Championship by unanimous victory over the former WBU World Champion Tony Oakey and defended the title three times by knockout against Douglas Otieno, Samson Onyango and Billy Boyle. On July 18, 2009 he boxed against the undefeated, later European champion Danny McIntosh for the additional title of British champion and won by technical knockout in round 7. He then defended his two titles against Courtney Fry.

On February 13, 2010 he was the new European champion of the EBU ; he defeated the Italian Antonio Brancalion in London by technical knockout in the 5th round. On September 18, he defeated Karo Murat in a title elimination battle for the chance of the WBO world title, the intercontinental champion of the WBO, by technical knockout in round 10. For Murat this meant the first defeat of his professional career (22-0) . On December 11, 2010, he secured the WBO interim world championship by unanimously winning points against Nadjib Mohammedi and thus became the mandatory challenger of the reigning WBO world champion Jürgen Brähmer .

Since Brähmer missed two mandatory dates set by the WBO due to alleged illnesses and training injuries, the world title was withdrawn from him and Cleverly was named the new WBO world champion on May 19, 2011. His first title defense on May 21, he won by technical knockout in the fourth round against Poland's Aleksy Kuziemski . On October 15, he played his second title defense against the undefeated Commonwealth Champion Tony Bellew (16-0) and won on points.

On February 25, 2012, he defended the title in Wales by unanimously winning points against the American Tommy Karpency (21-2) and on November 10, 2012 by tKo against Shawn Hawk (23-2). On April 20, 2013, he won unanimously on points against Robin Krasniqi (39-2).

On August 17, 2013, he played his next title defense against the Russian Sergei Kowaljow (21-0). Cleverly had to go down twice in the third round and was taken out of the fight by the referee in the fourth round. He suffered the first defeat of his professional career and lost his WBO title, which he had previously held for two years and defended five times.

In November 2014 he was also defeated in Liverpool against Tony Bellew (22-2). He suffered another defeat in October 2015 on points against Andrzej Fonfara (27-3). On October 1, he defeated Jürgen Brähmer in Neubrandenburg after the sixth round by breaking off due to an elbow injury Brähmer, and won the regular world championship belt of the WBA. He lost this in his first title defense through a premature defeat to Badou Jack (21-1). After this fight, he announced his retirement from boxing.
