Karo Murat ( Armenian Կարո Մուրատ , eigtl. Armenian Կարապետ Մուրադյան Karapet Muradjan ; born September 2, 1983 in Iraq ) is a German boxer of Armenian descent. He was, among other things, European champion in super middleweight and light heavyweight, as well as world championship challenger of the IBF in light heavyweight.
Origin and youth
Murat was born in Iraq as a member of the Armenian minority population. His family came to Germany via Armenia in 1993, where Murat grew up in the Franconian town of Kitzingen , which, along with Armenia, he regards as his home. He started boxing at the age of 13.
Murat lives in Kitzingen and Berlin.
Boxing career
During his amateur career he was national champion in Bavaria several times. He started for Kitzingen, Würzburg, Eichstätt, Nuremberg and Hamm and played 118 amateur fights, of which he won 90.
From 2006 to 2014 Murat was a professional boxer at the Sauerland boxing stable , to which well-known greats such as Henry Maske , Sven Ottke , Arthur Abraham and Marco Huck belonged. He was trained by Ulli Wegner . He made his professional debut on September 23, 2006 in Hattersheim am Main against the Slovak Matus Sestak and won by knockout in round 1. He won his first 22 fights in a row, 13 of them by knockout, of which six were already in the first round came about.
On August 18, 2007, he defeated the WBC Caribbean champion Jermain Mackey by unanimous victory in points in Berlin . On December 29 of the same year in Bielefeld he also beat the former WBC Latino champion Emiliano Cayetano by technical knockout (TKO) in round 7. On February 16, 2008 he won the external EU title of the EBU , an advanced title of the European championship, through a technical knockout in round 10 against Sergey Kharchenko . In his next fight on April 12th he was finally the new European champion of the EBU in the super middleweight division; He won unanimously on points against the former WBC world champion and two-time European champion Cristian Sanavia from Italy. He then defended his European title by winning points against the later WBA world champion Gabriel Campillo , as well as in the rematch against Sanavia by technical knockout in round 10.
On August 29, 2009 he became the new intercontinental light heavyweight champion of the WBO by winning points against Serhiy Demchenko and defended the title on January 30, 2010 by TKO in round 2 against Sean Corbin from Guyana and on May 1, 2010 by winning points against the US American Tommy Karpency.
On September 18, 2010 he boxed in a title elimination match for the chance of the WBO world title against the undefeated Briton Nathan Cleverly ; Murat lost the fight in Birmingham , his opponent's hometown, to TKO in round 10.
After winning a build-up battle five months later, he won on May 7, 2011 by TKO in round 11 against Otis Griffin the intercontinental championship of the IBF in the light heavyweight division.
On October 1, 2011, in Neubrandenburg, he played a title match between the IBF Association and Gabriel Campillo, whom he had defeated on points in the first encounter more than three years earlier. This time the fight ended in a draw after twelve rounds, after a judge had declared the fight a draw and one judge each for Campillo and Murat.
In the Boardwalk Hall of Atlantic City (New Jersey) Murat fought on October 27, 2013 against Bernard Hopkins , the then reigning IBF world champion. Murat lost to Hopkins in this twelve round fight according to the unanimous decision of the referees on points.
On April 25, 2015, he defeated Benjamin Simon (25-1) prematurely in the seventh round. In December 2015 he was knocked out against Sullivan Barrera .
On July 1, 2017, Murat won the title of European light heavyweight champion according to the EBU version, after defeating Freyburg's former junior world champion Dominic Bösel by TKO in the eleventh round.
On March 24, 2018, he defeated Travis Reeves in the fight for the vacant IBO World Championship title, which he lost to Sven Fornling on December 15, 2018.
