history

Originally a double triple gymnasium was to be built, for which the city council commissioned planning in 1978. At that time, the hall was to be built in Ravensberger Park and had an audience capacity of 2,500. The narrowness of the park and the small number of spectators caused the planning to stall. In 1985 the main committee of the city changed the plans to a large sports hall with up to 5,000 seats. Two years later, the city council rejected the construction of a large sports hall. As a result, the citizens' initiative became a large sports hall, now! founded, in which 70 sports clubs participated. The initiative collected donations and signatures to help the council change its mind.

Finally, on August 1, 1988, the city council voted to build a large sports hall. According to a resolution of March 16, 1989, the hall in Ravensberger Park will be built. On June 15, 1989, the plans were changed and construction was to take place on Werner-Bock-Strasse. There was previously an abandoned building yard on the site . Hartmut Scheiding was the architect of the Seidensticker Halle. The construction costs amounted to around 35 million marks, which was financed by donations and grants from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The Seidensticker company also donated four million marks. As a thank you, the hall was named after the company.

The foundation stone for the Seidensticker Hall was laid on October 20, 1989. Construction was not without complications. In addition to contaminated sites from the building yard, a slate base was found in the subsoil . The groundwater was not allowed to be lowered for the construction of the hall . Concrete blocks filled with sand were used as the foundation . In addition, eight pumps had to run continuously. Finally, the Seidensticker Hall was officially opened on March 5, 1993.
