Yoan Pablo Hernández Suárez (born October 28, 1984 in Pinar del Río ) is a former Cuban - German boxer and IBF world cruiserweight champion.

amateur

Hernández, a 1.93 m tall southpaw, took second place in the 2001 World Cup in the Cadet age group (U-17). In 2002 he beat Stefan Köber in the semi-finals of the heavyweight division at the Junior World Championships in Santiago de Cuba and then won the title. After he lost to Cuban superstar Odlanier Solís twice in 2003, the trainers let him lose ten kilograms and box in the light heavyweight division (up to 81 kg).

He won the light heavyweight silver medal at the 2003 Pan American Games , where he was defeated by the Mexican Ramiro Reducindo on points 20 to 37. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he lost in the preliminary round against Russian double world champion Yevgeny Makarenko with 18 to 30. In 2005 he became Cuban heavyweight champion with a 22:18 point win over Luis Ortiz after Odlanier Solís had switched to super heavyweight.

professional

In 2005, after a defeat by Alexander Powernow at the Chemistry Cup in Halle, he left the Cuban team and became a professional with Wilfried Sauerland and trained with Ulli Wegner . Hernández demonstrated his class impressively in his first two professional fights. At the ICC Berlin he made his professional debut on September 3, 2005 against David Vicena . In his fifteenth professional fight, Hernández suffered his first defeat against former world champion Wayne Braithwaite . Although he already had Braithwaite on the ground in the first round, he lost in the third round due to a technical knockout , after he himself had to go down three times.

On October 1, 2011, Hernández won the Cruiserweight World Championship fight of the International Boxing Federation against Steve Cunningham in Neubrandenburg . The fight was stopped and evaluated by the referee after the 6th round on the advice of the ring doctor because of two cut injuries to Hernández. One judge scored in favor of Cunningham, two judges scored the fight in favor of Hernández, who thus won the world title. He also won the rematch on February 4, 2012 in Frankfurt am Main after 12 rounds on points.

After winning points against Troy Ross (25-2) in September 2012, he only defended his title again on November 23, 2013 by knockout in the tenth round against Alexander Alexejew . The next defense followed on August 16, 2014; this time Hernández controversially won against Firat Arslan on points.

Hernández had to cancel a title defense against the Argentine Victor Emilio Ramírez planned for October 2, 2015 due to an injury to his knee , whereupon the IBF stripped him of the title and then awarded Ramírez. Hernández then announced his retirement on September 27, 2015 for health reasons. In addition to knee surgery, surgery on the elbow is also required.
