career

Stefan Köber started boxing at BC Frankfurt (Oder) at the age of eleven . He finished the European championship of the age group of cadets (U-17) in the Greek Patras in 2000 in the light heavyweight division as runner-up. At the Junior World Championship in 2002 in Santiago de Cuba , he took a third place as a heavyweight, he was defeated in the semifinals of the Cuban Yoan Pablo Hernandez , today's professional in the boxing stable of Wilfried Sauerland .

In 2003 Köber became German heavyweight champion with a point win (19:17) in the final over Alexander Powernow . In the final of the German championship in 2004, he met Powernow, who was able to win this match early. After he was already counted in the first round, he was hit badly in the second section, whereupon his coach was in the towel. At the 32nd Chemistry Cup he was also able to qualify for the final match in 2004, but lost there significantly against the Cuban Olympic champion Odlanier Solís .

At the military world championship in 2006 in Warendorf he competed in the super heavyweight division, but broke his hand in the second round during his first round match against the Tunisian Mohamed Kabeeh . Although he still won 19:14 on points, he was unable to compete in the quarter-finals against Varghese Johnson from India .

In October 2007 Köber took part in the amateur world championships in Chicago , but lost there already in the first fight against the Lithuanian Jaroslawas Jaksto with 6:22 points. In February 2008, he was defeated in the Italian Pescara at the first European qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games in Beijing the Bulgarians kubrat pulev 12:25. For the second qualifying tournament in Athens in April 2008 , he was not taken into account, so that he could not acquire a starting place for the Olympic boxing tournament.

Then he changed the weight class and started again in the heavyweight division. In February 2009 Köber won the 37th Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) , and in the final he beat Vitalijus Subacius from Lithuania 9: 5. At the 15th Amateur World Championships held in Milan , Köber also competed in the heavyweight division, but was already defeated there in the preliminary round on points (3:24) against eventual world champion Yegor Mechonzew from Russia. At the German championships he was able to secure his 3rd German championship title in the men's class.

Köber also started at the 2010 European heavyweight championships in Moscow. Here, too, he met the world champion, later European champion, Yegor Mechonzew from Russia, to whom he was defeated 2:10.

In March 2011, Köber started at the 38th Chemical Cup in Halle (Saale) in order to recommend himself at the national level for the World Championships taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan) from September 26th to October 8th. There he met Warren Baister (England) in the quarter-finals. Köber dominated the fight, but broke his right middle hand in the first round. With this handicap he achieved a narrow win on points (6: 5), but was eliminated from the tournament due to the injury. After a long forced break, Köber went to the Military World Games in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in July. There he beat the Cameroonian Salomon Bong in the quarterfinals with a technical knockout in the 2nd round. Köber was also able to make the semi-final fight victorious against Turkish Omer Aydogan (10: 8), but he injured his right metacarp again. On the day of the final, Köber was found not fit for boxing in the course of the preliminary medical examination and had to be satisfied with the silver medal, which was nevertheless the greatest success of the German boxing delegation in Rio. Due to the renewed injury break, Köber was no longer able to participate in the World Championships in Baku, which forced him to miss the first opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games. At the German Championships 2011 in Leipzig, Köber took 3rd place after a controversial defeat (17:10) against Stefan Sittner (Marne / Schleswig-Holstein).

The year 2012 started boxing for Köber with the chemistry cup in Halle (Saale), where the German athletes wanted to recommend themselves for the Olympic qualification tournament in Trabzon, Turkey. After the unexpected end in the quarter-finals against the Turkish Umit Can Patir, the chance to qualify for the Olympic Games was already wasted early.

After missing the Olympic qualification in 2012, Köber ended his competitive sports career.
