The Rittal Arena Wetzlar is a multifunctional hall in the Hessian city of Wetzlar . The event hall, which opened in March 2005, has a maximum capacity of 6,000 spectators and an interior area of 2,468 m². Next to the arena is the Wetzlar train station and the Forum Wetzlar with a shared car park with 1,700 parking spaces. The facility has a direct connection to the federal highway 49 . The construction of the hall cost the city of Wetzlar around 16 million euros . The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) co-financed more than a third with over 5.6 million euros.
Until March 1st, 2006 the hall was called Mittelhessen-Arena . The naming rights were sold to Rittal , a company belonging to the Friedhelm Loh Group . The hall has been called the Rittal Arena since then . In June 2015, the expiring contract was extended into 2020.
The Rittal Arena is always the location of national and international sporting events of great importance. Among other things, it is the home ground of the handball Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar (anchor rental agreement ). For games of the handball Bundesliga , the capacity is 4,421 spectators. Concerts, shows and other sporting events also take place regularly in the multifunctional hall: Wetzlar and the Rittal Arena were the official host of the handball world championship , which took place in Germany from January 19 to February 4, 2007. The 2007 European wheelchair basketball championship took place in Wetzlar from August 23 to September 2, 2007 ; the August Bebel sports hall (with 1,800 seats) was the venue for the second hall . World, European and German dance championships were also held in the arena, such as the standard world championships for seniors in 2005 and the standard world championships for amateurs (main class) in 2010.
