German table tennis championship 2014
The 82nd national German table tennis championship took place from February 28 to March 2, 2014 in Wetzlar in the Rittal Arena .
Dimitrij Ovtcharov became German champion in singles for the first time by defeating Timo Boll 4-1 in the final . Lars Hielscher / Bastian Steger won the men's doubles - in which neither Ovtcharov nor Boll competed . It was their fourth title after 2006 , 2011 and 2012 , which they won together in doubles (with other partners both were German champions before). In the women's category, Shan Xiaona defended her singles title from the previous year with a 4-2 final win over Han Ying . And also in doubles with Kristin Silbereisenshe won gold, even though these partners played together in a tournament for the first time. The women's individual final was dramatic. After Shan Xiaona led 3-1, a time game began in the fifth set - difficult for both defenders, which Han Ying won with 17:15. In the sixth set, Shan Xiaona secured victory with 11: 7.
Timo Boll still has to share the title record - nine times German champion - with Eberhard Schöler and Conny Freundorfer . Dimitrij Ovtcharov won the last four matches against Boll as well as this final. Since Ovtcharov was now in 6th place in the ITTF world rankings before Boll, many saw this DM win as a "takeover" in German table tennis.
The injured Wu Jiaduo and Patrick Baum were missing .
A mixed competition did not take place. All main rounds were played in the KO system, namely according to the best-of-seven mode (four winning sets required), the doubles before the quarterfinals as best-of-five (three winning sets required). The individual fights were preceded by group games in which the active players with the lowest number of values had to qualify for the main field.
useful information
- The final Dimitrij Ovtcharov against Timo Boll saw 3,100 spectators, on all days a total of 7,700 spectators were counted, although less was expected due to the carnival this weekend.
- For Shan Xiaona it was the second participation in a German championship after 2013 . She has not lost a single.
- Han Ying hadn't lost a single set by the end of the game. Shan Xiaona was similarly superior, she only made one set (against Irene Ivancan in the semifinals).
