history

Table tennis in Saxony-Anhalt

The following overview begins with the end of the Second World War , because on the one hand there is no longer any information on table tennis in central Germany before 1945 and on the other hand the state of Saxony-Anhalt (large areas of the former Prussian province of Saxony) was only formed after 1945 by resolution of the victorious Allied powers has been.

Table tennis began between 1945 and 1946 with a reorganization. Sports communities emerged that organized games at the local level (cities, districts). This was gradually expanded until a state class started playing in the 1949/50 game year and state championships were held in singles / doubles competitions for the first time.

With the establishment of the German Sports Committee on October 1, 1948, central sport-specific structures (table tennis section, regional and regional table tennis sections) were brought into being. In Saxony-Anhalt were u. a. Rudolf Helmrich and Claus Pönitzsch played a key role in setting up a regional table tennis organization.

In 1949/50 Chemie Piesteritz and 1950/51 Chemie Leuna were national champions for men. For women, Post Magdeburg (later BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg ) had a top team that was twice national champion and twice GDR champion.

In the game year 1951/52 the DS-Liga (the later GDR-Oberliga) took up its game operations, in which from Saxony-Anhalt with the men chemistry Leuna and chemistry Piesteritz and with the women construction Börde Magdeburg and chemistry Leuna were represented.

Before the state of Saxony-Anhalt was divided into the districts of Magdeburg and Halle, five state individual championships were held. The national champions in the individual disciplines are listed below:

With the formation of the districts of Magdeburg and Halle, table tennis in Saxony-Anhalt was split in two from autumn 1952 to the end of 1990. The management of the game operation was incumbent on the district technical committees, which initially had their organizational roof in the table tennis section of the GDR and then from 1958 in the German table tennis association.

Kurt Schüler, Otto Busch, Kurt Prieskorn, Erwin Lühr, Gerhard Fischer and Manfred Heimann acted as chairmen of the district technical committees in Magdeburg, in Halle Claus Pönitzsch, Werner Lüderitz , Horst Taubert, Helmut Luther and Wolfgang Creutzmann. In recognition of their 25 years of activity in this position, Gerhard Fischer and Wolfgang Creutzmann were elected honorary chairmen when the Table Tennis Association Saxony-Anhalt was founded in 1990 and were awarded the gold pin of honor by DTTB in 1994.

The founding of sports clubs and the establishment of performance centers for table tennis in 1954 had fatal consequences for Saxony-Anhalt, which was not considered. The best players, including Inge Ristock , Isolde Woschee , Elke Richter , Günter Matthias , Harald Killer, Hans Täger , Joachim Frings and Werner Mitdank, gradually left the country.

In the early years, Saxony-Anhalt had a top position at GDR level. In addition to the two team titles from Post Magdeburg, Chemie Leuna was GDR runner-up in 1951 for men and in the same year also GDR champion for male youth.

Astrid Hobohm-Horn from Quedlinburg was GDR champion in women's singles four times in a row from 1949 to 1952, Isolde Woschee (Halle) was GDR champion in 1958 and 1959, Günter Matthias won the men's singles in 1952, Rademacher / Kunth (Leuna) won the men's doubles in 1949 and Horn / Büldge (Magdeburg) were GDR champions in the women's doubles in 1951 .

Inge Woschee (Halle) won the girls' singles title at the GDR youth championships in 1955. In the double competitions were Wolfgang Kunth (Leuna), Oswald Schreiber (Leuna), Inge and Isolde Woschee (Halle), Inge Ristock (Leuna), Dagmar Mestchen and Gabi Hoppe (Schönebeck), Elke Richter (Halle), Karin Kromnik (Schönebeck) , Hans-Jürgen Fromm (Magdeburg) and Hans-Jürgen Albrecht (Zerbst) successfully. Runner-up in the boys' singles was Klaus Knoth (Leuna) in 1954 and 1955.

The level of play in comparison to the other countries inevitably had to lag behind. All the more remarkable is the performance of the men's team from BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg with the brothers Hans-Jürgen and Wolfgang Fromm, which made it to the top league in 1958 and took the place behind the sports club teams from Berlin, Jena and Leipzig for 20 years. The longstanding work of the Magdeburg section leader, Max Fromm, is unforgettable here. In addition to Magdeburg, Dynamo Halle was also represented in the major league for a long time.

Despite these departures, Saxony-Anhalt still landed a spectacular victory in the German Cup . In Stendal in 1955 Berlin (East) was defeated 5: 4 with Matthias , Pleuse and thanks to Schleener , Täger and Frings.

After the decline in the promotion of table tennis in the GDR, Saxony-Anhalt was also able to catch up again in the 1980s, primarily in the women's field. Chemistry Schönebeck took second place in the league in 1982/83, Karin Kromnik and Dagmar Mestchen from this team were each GDR champion twice in women's singles. Eva Kummer from Quedlinburg was involved in six titles in doubles and mixed.

Participants from Saxony-Anhalt also achieved several successes in the youth competitions. Representative here are the first places of Hans-Jürgen Fromm (Magdeburg) and Gerlind Hanschke (Haldensleben) in the pupil-pupil-individual and of Chemie Leuna in the pupil-team.

On October 7, 1990, the Table Tennis Association Saxony-Anhalt eV was founded in Dessau. The following were elected to the Presidium: Werner Lüderitz (President), Lutz Boegelsack (Vice President), Reiner Schulz (Vice President), Günther Wadewitz (Treasurer), Wolfgang Lunk (Press attendant), Werner Hubig (sports attendant) and Hannfried Buchholz (youth attendant). Lutz Boegelsack has been the new president since the 5th Association Day of the TTVSA on May 20, 2000. Werner Lüderitz , who did not run again for reasons of age, was appointed honorary president. Members of the Presidium are now Reiner Schulz (Vice President), Wolfgang Strohmeyer (Vice President), Dieter Hebenstreit (Treasurer), Werner Hubig (Sports Manager), Frank Thomas (Youth Manager) and Wolfgang Schleiff (Press Manager).

From the beginning, the management of the TTVSA tried to improve the level of sport. The training at the sports high school in Halle by the regional coach Günter Spott led young players to the top of the state, who then switched to other state associations. The waning interest in special training in the sports high school, which ultimately led to the abandonment of our sport at the sports high school in Halle, also had a negative effect. After his election, Boegelsack particularly campaigned for a resumption of TT special training, which was finally started at the beginning of the 2001/2002 game year at the Magdeburg sports school.

The regional association and its district associations organize extensive gaming operations. From the association league to the 2nd district class, it comprises 310 men's and 50 women's teams in five levels. There are district leagues and district classes in the junior division.

In the 2007/2008 season, due to the regional reform in Saxony-Anhalt, the game operations were restructured so that the point games were held for women from the association league to the district league and for men from the association league to the district class. In the junior division, the divisions were retained.

Individual championships are held annually in all age groups. National champions in the women's singles were Steffi Erxleben (4), Grit Hopstock (2), Anke Weiß, Dagmar Fischer (formerly Dagmar Mestchen), Elke Hamel (formerly Elke Richter), Marie Pommrenke, Anja Heimann, Gabi Schuchna, Marion Vollmer (formerly Marion Behr) (5), Mandy Ködel (3), Ulrike Jennert, Julia Bütow, Doreen Beckert (2), Verena Zimmermann (2), Linda Ackner (formerly Linda Renner) and Luisa Reising (2), in the men's singles Frank Kowar (2), Frank Reimer (2), Mario Mohs, Volker Junge, Rene Grunwald, Oliver Gamm, Michael Kollatsch, Christian Thomas, Stephan Köpp, Falko Hille, Frank Kasiske, Christian Roß, Erik Bottroff, Sven Köhler (2), Matthias Dietrich (3), Jonas Schüttig, Jens Beckmann, Robert Roß (3), Tom Gerbig, Stefan Bindemann, Marin Kostadinov, Jens Köhler and Christian Tschense.

The teams of the TTVSA have not had an easy position in the NTTV-Oberliga. In the women's category, only HSV Wernigerode 1995, which had to leave this class after 2 years, and TSV 1990 Merseburg 2005 made it to the regional league. In the 2001/2002 season, TSV 1990 Merseburg also achieved promotion to the regional league for men. However, immediate relegation was predetermined by players leaving.

In the senior competitions, the players from Saxony-Anhalt achieved several placements at German championships. Elke Hamel (Zeitz) and her partner Carla Strauss (Saxon Table Tennis Association) won 1xGold, 1xSilver, 1xBronze in women's doubles and at the European Championships 2xGold. German champions 2003 in men's doubles were Manfred Gomm and Hans-Jürgen Spengler in their age group.

In the 2009/2010 season, due to a territorial reorganization within the DTTB, a renewed restructuring of the game operations. Since then, the Saxon Table Tennis Association (STTV), the Table Tennis Association Saxony-Anhalt and the Thuringian Table Tennis Association (TTTV) have formed the Central German Table Tennis Association. At the moment the TTVSA is present with the TTV Barleben 09 and the TTC Börde Magdeburg for the women and the HSV Medizin Magdeburg for the men in the Oberliga Mitte. In the newly formed Regionalliga Süd, the gentlemen of DJK TTV Biederitz and SSV 90 Landsberg currently represent the colors of Saxony-Anhalt.

On March 28th, 2009, the first women's team of TSV 1990 Merseburg achieved something unique in table tennis in Saxony-Anhalt. Due to a draw in the top game of the Regionalliga Nord in 2008/09, the Merseburg women rose to the 2nd Bundesliga North.
