Hans-Jürgen Fromm

Hans-Jürgen Fromm (born June 26, 1941 in Magdeburg ; † July 8, 2002 in Nottensdorf ) was an East German table tennis player . He took part in the 1959 World Cup.

youth

Fromm was the son of table tennis players. He played since 1951 for the club BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg (today TTC Börde Magdeburg), in which his younger brother Wolfgang was later active. In 1955 he was GDR student master. In 1957 and 1958 he won the GDR youth team championship. In 1958 he was nominated for a youth international match in England and for the European youth championship in Sweden.

Adults

With the men's team of BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg, he rose to the GDR league at the end of the 1957/58 season. That year he was ranked fifth in the GDR. At the GDR championships in 1959 he won the title in doubles with Heinz Reimann . With Hans Täger he was third in doubles in 1961 and second in 1963. In the individual, he reached third place in 1959 and 1961. In 1962 he became a master at the University of Magdeburg.

Fromm had his first international assignment with the men in March 1959 in Leipzig. In the 5-0 defeat against England he was defeated by former world champion Johnny Leach .

In 1959 he was nominated for the individual competitions of the World Cup in Dortmund. Here he won after a bye against Laurie Landry (England) and lost in the third round to the Chinese Yang Jui-Hua. The doubles with Heinz Reimann were eliminated in the first round against Jaroslav Staněk / Josef Posejpal (TCH).

Fromm played in Magdeburg until 1992, then he moved to Buxtehude .

Private

In 1959, Fromm began studying manufacturing technology at the TH Magdeburg , which he completed with a diploma. In 1963 he married the table tennis player Erika Bernard, with her he had a daughter. Professionally, he worked as a designer and project manager in the GDR and often in other Eastern European countries. In 1986 he married again, moved to Buxtehude for professional reasons and was deployed on construction sites in Sweden, Brazil and Indonesia. He died in 2002 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
