Jaroslav Staněk

Jaroslav Staněk (born February 24, 1940 in Podwihof , Opava district ) is a Czechoslovak table tennis player who was one of the best in Europe in the 1960s and was European champion in doubles in 1964.

Career

In the mid-1960s Staněk belonged to the Slavia Prague club , with whose men's team he was Czech champion in 1965/66 and then won the ETTU Cup .

Staněk achieved numerous international successes with his compatriot Vladimír Miko as a double partner. From 1959 to 1971 he took part in seven world championships . He came in 1967 in doubles to the semi-finals. Four times he was fifth with the team. He was nominated four times for the European Championships . Here he was most successful in 1964 , when he was third in the individual competition after his semi-final defeat against the Hungarian Zoltán Berczik and in doubles with Miko through the final victory against the Swedes Hans Alsér / Kjell Johansson was European champion. At the next EM in 1966 , the same opponents faced each other in the final. This time Staněk / Miko lost and came second.

At the International German Championships the doubles won in 1966 and 1968, in the singles Staněk was first in 1966. In 1964 he finished second in the mixed with Marta Lužová . In men's singles, he also won the International Championships in Wales (1966), England (1967), Czechoslovakia (1969) and Canada (1969). With his club Slavia Prague, he won the European club cup in 1969. In the ITTF world rankings he was ranked tenth in mid-1969.

End of active career

After 1971 Staněk ceased to appear internationally. He later worked as a journalist and won the journalism tournament at the 1977 World Cup . In the 1990s he was national coach in Austria.
