The Saarländische Tischtennisbund eV (STTB) is the union of the table tennis clubs in Saarland . 132 associations are affiliated with it (as of June 2017). The president is Werner Laub, the office is in Saarbrücken .

The STTB was founded in 1946. It was initially an independent association, independent of the German Table Tennis Association DTTB and as such became a provisional member in 1950 and a full member in 1951 of the World Table Tennis Association ITTF . He took part in two world championships with his own assets . When it was decided in 1956 to rejoin the Saarland to the Federal Republic of Germany, the STTB joined the German Table Tennis Association DTTB and thus lost its international independence.

history

The first attempts to organize a game in Saarland go back to Erich Mittermüller, who organized championships in 1932, which saw Willi Otto and Miss Seibert as well as the teams Fürstenhausen (men) and Dillingen (women) as winners in the individual competitions. In 1935 the Saarland, which until then had been assigned to France, rejoined the German Empire. The Saarland's sports operations were assigned to the Gaus Süd-West (one of 16 German districts). During the Second World War , table tennis largely came to a standstill.

In the spring of 1946, the clubs that were active at the time and approved by the military government founded the Saarland Table Tennis Association in Saarbrücken in the Zum Hirsch inn . Karl Dorsch (St. Wendel) became the first chairman, while Erich Mittermüller took over the organization of gaming operations. On January 19, 1950, the first official international match was carried out, which was lost in Saarbrücken against Vietnam with 0: 5.

In 1950, the Saarland tried to become a member of the table tennis world association ITTF . This was advocated by the ITTF Congress, which took place parallel to the 1951 World Cup in Vienna: Saarland was accepted as a provisional ( good standing ) member, but together with Germany had to pay for the replacement costs for the Corbillion Cup, which was lost in the chaos of war had gone to participate. The cost of this was £ 10. A good standing member has all the rights of a full member, but is not allowed to vote. However, games with Germany were prohibited.

In 1952, the ITTF Congress accepted Saarland as a full member. As a result, the Saarland took part in the World Championships in 1954 in London and 1955 in Utrecht with women and men, but never came close to medal ranks. At these world championships, the Yugoslav Tibor Harangozo acted as coach.

In 1952, the integration of gaming operations into that of the Federal Republic of Germany was approved. In particular, the Saarlanders were able to take part in German individual and team championships. Saarland had been looking towards Germany for several years, when it joined the interest group of Southwest German table tennis associations . In the 1954/55 season, Saarland teams, namely TV Beckingen and 1. FC Saarbrücken , started in the Oberliga Südwest for the first time.

As a result of a referendum in 1956, the politicians in charge decided to incorporate the Saarland into the Federal Republic of Germany. As a result, Saarland applied for admission to the German Table Tennis Association DTTB in June 1956. The Federal General Assembly in October 1956 in Hachen unanimously approved this proposal. The international independence of the STTB thus expired.
