The 1. FC Saarbrücken table tennis is a German table tennis club from Saarbruecken . The first men's team has played in the table tennis Bundesliga since 2009 and became German champions for the first time in 2020. Until 2011 the club was part of 1. FC Saarbrücken .

history

1. FC Saarbrücken also played table tennis for several years in the Bundesliga (currently DTTL | 1. Bundesliga). As champions of the Oberliga Südwest , the Saarlanders qualified directly for the newly founded table tennis Bundesliga in 1966 . In the debut year it was enough with the line-up of Karl-Heinz Russy , Friedel Hahn, Karlheinz Schreiner, Bruno Paulus, Eberhard Oetzel, Wolfgang Liehn, Erwin Berg and Hans Schommer for sixth place and thus relegation. But as early as 1968, the FCS was relegated from bottom of the table with just one point from 18 games. In 1973 they were promoted back to the 1st Bundesliga, where the club was able to hold out for four seasons before being relegated again at the end of the 1976/77 season. As a result, the local rival ATSV Saarbrücken was the leading table tennis club in Saarbrücken.

In the 1980s, ATSV Saarbrücken dominated not only regionally and nationally, but also internationally. Later financial problems led to a relegation. In the 1990s the table tennis department of 1. FC Saarbrücken was able to stabilize again and became number one again in Saarland. Since the 2004/05 season the 1st team has been playing in the 2nd Bundesliga South and since the 2009/10 season in the DTTL | 1st National League.

In 2006/07, 3rd place in the 2nd Bundesliga South was achieved straight away, and in 2007/08 even the runner-up behind FC Tegernheim was achieved. The goals for the 2008/09 season were set high, the championship and promotion to the 1st Bundesliga (DTTL) were planned. In order to implement this objective, the management was specifically strengthened. In addition to the commitment of Jiří Vráblík from the second division champions FC Tegernheim and the two young German ranking players Alexander Flemming and Dennis Dickhardt from the league competitor Döbeln, 1. FC Saarbrücken caused a sensation with two other commitments: The top player was the experienced first division player Jörg Schlichter from the DTTL -Club TTC Rhön-Sprudel Fulda-Maberzell , and the long-time Bundesliga coach of Müller Würzburger Hofbräu , Matthias Landfried , was hired as head coach .

At the German table tennis championships in Bielefeld in 2009, the Flemming / Schlichter doubles became German champions. They defeated their opponents Ruwen Filus and Steffen Mengel from the first division club TTV Gönnern with 7:11, 12:10, 9:11, 11: 8, 12:10 and 11: 4.

The table tennis team of 1. FC Saarbrücken has been part of the 1. Table Tennis Bundesliga since the 2009/10 season. With 32: 4 points, the team around Jörg Schlichter, Alexander Flemming, Jiri Vrablik, Erik Illas, Wang Xue Xin, Benjamin Rösner, Dennis Dickhardt and coach Matthias Landfried took first place in the 2nd Bundesliga South.

In the 2009/10 season the world-class players Leung Chu Yan (HKG, SV Plüderhausen , formerly Würzburg), Bojan Tokič (SVN, ASDTT Pieve Emanuele - Italy, formerly Frickenhausen) and Andrej Gaćina (HRV, Royal Villette Charleroi - Belgium). Jiří Vráblík (CZE, 1. FC Saarbrücken, formerly FC Tegernheim ) also belongs to the squad from the promotion team, Matthias Landfried (GER, Wendlingen) is still the head coach of the DTTL team . The objective in the promotion year was to stay up. This goal was exceeded, the team fought for a long time to get into the playoffs and the Champions League qualification and ended up in 5th place. The 2nd team became champions in the regional league and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga.

In the DTTL, the games no longer take place in the STTB table tennis hall in St. Ingbert, but in the modern Joachim-Deckarm-Halle in Saarbrücken.

In 2010/11 the goals were revised upwards. The aim of the club was to reach the playoffs and qualify for the Champions League. The team was once again significantly strengthened for this purpose. Andrej Gaćina and Leung Chu Yan returned to their previous clubs in Charleroi (Belgium) and Plüderhausen respectively. Jiří Vráblík also moved to SV Plüderhausen. The German national player Bastian Steger (then No. 25 of the WRL ) and the Portuguese João Monteiro (No. 43 of the WRL) were welcomed to the Saarland . Slovenia's No. 1 Bojan Tokič (No. 58 of the WRL) remained in the team, and the contract with coach Matthias Landfried was extended. For the 2nd team in the 2nd Bundesliga, Bojan Crepulja (Serbia, born 1991) and Cederic Nuytinck (Belgium, born 1993), two young talents who belong to the top group in Europe, were signed up. The team was able to qualify for the first time in the club's history in the DTTB Cup for the final round of the four strongest teams in Germany, the FINAL4, which took place on January 2, 2011 in the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. In the European Cup, the quarter-finals were reached, and in the 1st Bundesliga (DTTL) they reached 3rd place and thus the playoff games for the German championship. This also achieved direct qualification for the Champions League.

On April 29, 2011, the table tennis department founded an independent club under the name 1. FC Saarbrücken-Tischtennis (1. FCSTT).

The 2011/12 season turned out to be the most successful season in the club's history. In the DTTB Cup, 1. FC Saarbrücken-Tischtennis won the title of German Cup winner, in the Champions League they reached the semi-finals, in the 1. Bundesliga (TTBL) they won the championship (1st place with 30: 6 points) and in the playoffs you became German runner-up. The squad in the 2011/12 season again consisted of the players Bastian Steger (GER), Bojan Tokič (SLO), João Monteiro (POR) and Cedric Nuytinck (BEL). Matthias Landfried (GER) was the team's coach again .

The contracts with the players could also be extended for the 2012/13 season, while Matthias Landfried was the head coach of the three-time Croatian champions and Champions League Club STK Dr. Časl Zagreb has changed.

In the 2012/13 season it was not possible to build on the great successes of the previous year. Despite the identical draw, the German Cup win could not be defended by being eliminated in the quarter-finals. Also in the Champions League came the premature end due to two defeats against the French team ASTT Chartres. The championship in the 1st Bundesliga (TTBL) could not be repeated. 1. FC Saarbrücken TT finished fourth in the TTBL with 14:14 points and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the playoffs. The squad in the 2012/13 season again consisted of the players Bastian Steger (GER), Bojan Tokič (SLO), João Monteiro (POR) and Cedric Nuytinck (BEL). The coaching team was made up of Vasile Florea (ROM) and Damir Jurcic (CRO).

For the 2013/14 season João Monteiro moved to UMMC Ekaterinburg and was replaced by his compatriot Tiago Apolónia . The coach was the Serb Slobodan Grujić . The Bundesliga season ended in fourth place; in the play-offs, the team failed in the semi-finals at the TTC RhönSprudel Fulda-Maberzell . In the ETTU Cup , Tokic, Steger and Apolonia won the title after playing in the finals against TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen . In the following season, the team reached fourth place, which they could only secure on the last match day. But in the playoff semifinals almost a sensation was achieved against the favorites from Düsseldorf, who could be defeated in the first leg 3-0 (9-4 sets). Borussia Düsseldorf managed the turnaround in the second leg with a 3-0 win (with 9-3 sets), so that Saarbrücken was eliminated. In 2015/16 the team took first place in the table for a long time and finally came second behind Fulda with the same number of points. For the first time since 2012 they moved into the playoff final, but Düsseldorf won 3-1. For the next season Adrien Mattenet left the club and was replaced by Patrick Baum and Patrick Franziska . In 2017 Saarbrücken came fourth and met Düsseldorf in the play-offs in the semi-finals. The second game could be won, but the decisive third was lost, just like - also against Düsseldorf - the cup final of this season. In the 2017/18 season , the club lost third place on the last matchday, met Düsseldorf again in the semi-finals of the play-offs and was eliminated.

For the next season Apolónia, Tokič and Baum left the team, for them came Liao Cheng-Ting , Darko Jorgić and from the second team Tomáš Polanský . Cristian Pletea came to reinforce the international competitions. With this line-up they played for the ETTU Cup after the qualifying round in the Champions League , after a final defeat against GV Hennebont Saarbrücken came second. In the Bundesliga play-offs, the club surprisingly beat defending champions Düsseldorf and thus reached the final, which was lost to Ochsenhausen. Liao was then replaced by the Chinese Shang Kun . In this line-up, Saarbrücken became German champions for the first time in 2020.
