Tiago André Barata Feio Peixoto Apolónia (born July 28, 1986 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese table tennis player . With the Portuguese national team he was European champion in 2014 , in doubles with João Monteiro he won bronze at the 2019 World Cup .
Career
Apolónia began at the age of six with the club CF Estrela Amadora with the table tennis, with whose men's team he was twice Portuguese champion. In 1996 he won his first international title at the Iberian Schoolchildren's Championships. He came to TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen via 1. FC Saarbrücken and TTC indeland Jülich . With the club he was German runner-up in 2008/09 and 2009/10, and in 2008/09 he reached 2nd place in the Champions League .
In 2008 he took part in the individual competition at the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing and was eliminated in the first round. In the same year he and Marcos Freitas won the bronze medal in the double competition at the European Championships in St. Petersburg. At the European Championships 2011 in Gdansk he won the bronze medal with the Portuguese team, at the EM 2013 bronze in doubles with João Monteiro and in 2014 with a surprising final victory over Germany gold with the team. In 2015 he reached the semi-finals at the EM.
In 2013 he moved to 1. FC Saarbrücken , where he extended his contract for another two years in 2016. In 2014 he won the ETTU Cup with Saarbrücken.
Private
Tiago Apolónia has been married to the German table tennis player Zhenqi Barthel since July 2016 , the couple has a son (* 2017). Tiagos older brother Loao played at times in the top table tennis league in Portugal.
