The 27th European Table Tennis Championships (officially LIEBHERR European Table Tennis Championships 2008 in German LIEBHERR European Championships 2008) was from 4 to 12 October, 2008 Saint Petersburg discharged. Team, singles and doubles competitions were held. The venue was the Peterburgski sports and concert complex .

Competition mode

In the team competition, the 16 best participating nations met in four groups of four ("Championships Divisions") in the newly introduced group phase . Then the group first and second in each group played against each other in the knockout system for places one to eight. The third to fourth fought in the knockout system for places 9 to 16.

Similarly, the next strongest 16 nations were divided into four "Challenge" groups and then played in the knockout system for places 17 to 24 and 25 to 32 respectively. The remaining weakest nations were placed in two "standard" groups in the men's category divided up. Here it was about places 33 to 39. For the women there was only one "standard" group with six participants who fought for places 33 to 38.

In singles and doubles, the athletes started directly in the knockout system.

The German women took tenth place at the European Championships. The team of national coach Jörg Bitzigeio lost in the placement game against Poland.

Cutting off the Germans

The following players were used in the German women's team: Wu Jiaduo , Zhenqi Barthel , Kristin Silbereisen , Amelie Solja . In Group C, the team won 3-1 against Romania and Serbia, but lost 3-0 to Croatia. Because of the fewest won games, it came in third behind the tied women from Croatia and Romania. In the games for places 9 to 16, the team won against Belgium (3: 0) and France (3: 1). The game for place was lost against Poland 1: 3.

Results gentlemen

The German player Timo Boll won the gold medal in all three competitions and is therefore the most successful player in the European Championship. In addition, he managed to defend his title three times, which no player had ever succeeded in the 50-year history of the European Championship.

Germany's table tennis men defended their team title at the European Championships in 2008. The team of national coach Richard Prause around the players Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov won 3-2 in the final against Belarus. The teams from Belgium and Austria came third.

Cutting off the Germans

The following players were used in the German men's team: Timo Boll , Dimitrij Ovtcharov , Bastian Steger , Christian Süß , Patrick Baum . The team was unbeaten first in Group A. It defeated France, Denmark and Hungary. In the subsequent games for places one to eight, it won against Russia (3: 1), Austria (3: 2) and Belarus (3: 2).

Timo Boll defended his 2007 singles title and won the European singles championship for the third time. In the final, he defeated Vladimir Samsonov , against whom he was previously clearly inferior in the team competition. Third place went to the Austrians Robert Gardos and Werner Schlager .

Double

Despite a 1: 3 deficit in the final, the Germans Timo Boll and Christian Süß were able to successfully defend their title. They won 4: 3 against the duo Werner Schlager from Austria and Trinko Keen from the Netherlands.
