At the age of six he got to know table tennis, when he was thirteen he concentrated entirely on table tennis. His talent was noticed early on. He was sponsored by the Danish national coach Peter Sartz. In 1996 he was European youth champion, and in 1997 he took part in a world championship for the first time , where he was in the top 128 in singles and in the top 32 in doubles, just like at the next World Cup in 1999, in which he again European youth champion was. In doubles with Finn Tugwell he qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games , in which they reached the round of 16, the following year Maze came to the last 32 at the World Championships in singles and doubles. In 2002 he moved into the Danish and Brazilian Open Semi-finals and won his first medals on the Pro Tour . He was also able to qualify for the Pro Tour Grand Finals for the first time this year.
After he reached the semi-finals in 2003 when he first participated in the Europe Top 12 , he was able to win gold the following year, and he won bronze with Finn Tugwell at the Olympic Games and the Grand Finals in 2004. In 2005 he was European champion with the team that drew in his first World Cup participation in the quarterfinals and reached the semi-finals at the World Cup . He defeated, among others, Wang Hao and Hao Shuai , against whom he was already 0: 3 and 7:10 behind, but was still able to win 4: 3. Then Maze was named Sportsman of the Year in Denmark. He won bronze at the 2006 Europe Top 12 and the 2007 European Championship , and in 2009 he was European champion in the individual - after a 4: 3 over defending champion Timo Boll and a 4: 1 against the 2003 world champion Werner Schlager - and vice-European champion in the team. In addition, he was able to reach the quarter-finals at the World Cup and World Cup , but after that he was not very active internationally. In 2011 Michael Maze celebrated a comeback at the European Super Cup in Russia after a long injury break. He won the final against Dimitrij Ovtcharov 4: 3 and secured $ 50,000 in prize money. In 2012 he lost in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games 3: 4 against Dimitrij Ovtcharov, whom he was able to beat at the World Cup , where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual winner Ma Long . After another injury break, he reached the final of the Europe Top 12 2014, but could not take part in the World Cup and the European Championship in the same year because he had to undergo surgery again. At the 2015 European Championships , he failed to qualify, and on March 14, 2016, he ended his career due to many injuries. From the end of the year, however, he played for Roskilde board tennis again in the Champions League , and in February 2018 he announced a comeback with the aim of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games. In April / May he took part in the team world championship .
