Dimitrij Ovtcharov ( Ukrainian Дмитро Овчаров / Dmytro Ovcharov , Russian Дмитрий Михайлович Овчаров / Dmitry Mikhailovich Ovcharov * 2 September 1988 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a German table tennis player of Ukrainian origin.

Career

Already in his childhood Dimitrij was supported by his father Mikhail Owtscharow, a former Soviet table tennis master (about 80 appearances in the national team), and his mother Tatjana, who has an A-license coaching certificate. In 1992 the table tennis enthusiast moved to the Tündern district of Hamelin . There he joined TSV Schwalbe Tündern together with his father , rose to the Bundesliga in the 2005 season and worked for the top position within the team in the following season. From 2007 to 2009 he played for Borussia Düsseldorf . He then played at Royal Villette Charleroi in Belgium and in 2010 moved to the Russian club Gazprom Fakel Orenburg , with whom he won the Champions League four times . In autumn 2015 he extended his contract with Orenburg until 2019.

His first appearance in the German national team took place in September 2006 in the European Championship qualification against Romania. He won his two singles against Adrian Crişan and Andrei Filimon . At the 2007 European Table Tennis Championships in Belgrade , he was a member of the German squad, where he won gold with the team and bronze in the individual.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , for which he qualified directly with his world rankings position 19 in January 2008, he reached the final with the German national team after victories over Croatia, Canada, Singapore and Japan, which against the hosts 3-0 China was lost. In singles he reached the last sixteen. In addition to winning the silver medal with the team in Beijing, he managed to defend his title with the national team at the European Championships in St. Petersburg in 2008 with a 3-2 win over Belarus . In the decisive individual Ovtcharov beat the Belarusian Vitaly Nekhvedovich in four sets.

At the 2011 World Cup , Ovtcharov reached the round of 16, losing to Timo Boll 2: 4. In the final of the German championship in 2011 in Bamberg , he had to admit defeat 3: 4 against Bastian Steger . The summer of 2011 was very successful for Ovtcharov: Within only three weeks he won the Pro Tour tournaments Brazilian Open and Korean Open, at the Brazilian Open he did not drop a set.

Award ceremony at the 2012 Olympics

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he won the bronze medal in individual. After a 4: 3 win in the quarter-finals against Michael Maze , he failed in the semifinals against world champion Zhang Jike from China with 1: 4. In the final bronze game he won 4-2 against Taiwanese Chuang Chih-Yuan . After Jörg Roßkopf , Ovtcharov was the second German to win an Olympic medal in table tennis singles. With the team he also won the bronze medal. After a semi-final defeat by China, the German team retained the upper hand against Hong Kong 3-1. At the European Championships in 2012 Ovtcharov won the bronze medal in doubles together with Vladimir Samsonow . In the individual, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Because of his success, he was voted Table Tennis Player of the Year 2012 .

At the 2013 World Cup , Ovtcharov met Patrick Baum , with whom he has been friends since high school, in the round of 16 . Baum won the duel 4-1. In July 2013 he played for Guangdong in the Chinese Super League . In October 2013 he became the first individual European champion . In the absence of Timo Boll, he was the top seeded player in the semifinals against teammate Bastian Steger with 4: 2 the upper hand and defeated his clubmate Wladimir Samsonow 4: 0 in the final. He had previously won the title with the team and won all of his games here as well. Three weeks later he reached third place in the World Cup by beating Timo Boll . Before that he had lost 3: 4 in the semifinals against eventual winner Xu Xin after a 3-2 lead. He overtook Timo Boll in the ITTF world rankings and became the best German and also the best European for the first time. On March 2, 2014, he became German champion for the first time with a 4-1 win over Timo Boll in the final . In 2014 he was runner- up in Tokyo with the German team for the third time after 2010 and 2012 . In the final he won 3-0 sets against world and Olympic champion Zhang Jike , which meant his first individual defeat at world championships, and then lost to Ma Long without winning a set.

In 2015 Ovtcharov won the gold medal at the Europe TOP-16 , the European Games and the European Championship, and also silver with the team at the EM. At the World Cup he reached third place after losing 4-0 to the Chinese world champion Ma Long and defeating the Japanese top player Jun Mizutani in six sets in the game for third place. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he was eliminated in third place in the quarter-finals against Vladimir Samsonov with 2: 4. In the team competition, however, he remained undefeated and thus had a large share in winning the bronze medal. The World Cup in October ended for him after the first game he lost to Kristian Karlsson , and at the European Championship he lost to Jakub Dyjas in the 2nd round . He showed stronger performances again at the end of the year at the Grand Finals , in which he took a 2-0 lead in the quarter-finals against world number two Fan Zhendong. In the third set, however, he could not use the lead of 8: 3, 9: 5 and 10: 9, and when he won the point at 11:10, the ball broke on the edge of the fan, so that the point was not counted. After that Ovtcharov didn't get a set point and lost 2: 4.

Ovtcharov defended his title in the Europe Top 16 in 2017, making him the first player to win the tournament three times in a row. At the 2017 World Cup in Düsseldorf, he was defeated in the round of 16 by the world number 11 Kōki Niwa from Japan. Also in 2017, after defending against four match points, he won the China Open against Timo Boll, won gold again at the European Team Championship and - again after beating Timo Boll in the final - won the World Cup for the first time . At the German Open he defeated Yan An , Wong Chun Ting and, for the first time, the reigning Vice World Champion Fan Zhendong , before he met Timo Boll in the final for the third time this year and won gold with a 4-3 win . With the introduction of the new world ranking calculation at the turn of the year, the quarter-finals at the Grand Finals were enough for him to be number 1 in the world rankings from 2018. He achieved this by a 4: 3 round of 16 victory over Kōki Niwa, to whom he had just lost at the World Cup, followed by 4: 3 successes over Tomokazu Harimoto and Lin Gaoyuan and a final defeat against Fan Zhendong. Ovtcharov became the second German after Timo Boll at the top of the table tennis world rankings.

At the Europe Top16 tournament in Switzerland in 2018, Ovtcharov came in second in February 2018. After three wins, the German lost 4-0 to his compatriot Timo Boll in the final . At the Team World Cup , in which he, Boll and Franziska were only available to a limited extent due to injury problems, he again won silver with the German team. After returning from the injury break, he was unable to build on his previous performance for the time being and thus also not qualify for the Grand Finals 2018, so that in January 2019 he finally dropped out of the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time since the end of 2012. In February he won another major tournament with the Europe Top 16 Cup , but at the World Cup in April he failed in the third round at world rankings 58. Tomislav Pucar . With the team he won gold at the European Games and the European Team . In the Grand Finals , for which he qualified this year in singles, he retired in the first round against Lin Gaoyuan out in February 2020, it then reached again a top 10 ranking after being at the German Open under among other things the world number one Fan Zhendong had defeated.

Suspected doping and waiver of disciplinary proceedings

On September 22nd, 2010 the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) suspended Ovtcharov with immediate effect after a positive doping test . In the A-sample, he tested positive for the prohibited performance-enhancing agent Clenbuterol . Ovtcharov denied the use of doping substances and requested the opening of the B sample. On September 30, 2010, the German Table Tennis Association reported that the B sample was also positive. Ovtcharov suspected that he had unwittingly ingested the clenbuterol through contaminated food during the China Open in mid-August. In a hearing at the DTTB, circumstantial evidence was given and experts were heard. Among other things, Ovtcharov had a hair sample analyzed. The DTTB decided not to open disciplinary proceedings against Ovtcharov on October 15, 2010 because of the evidence presented. The suspension was lifted with immediate effect. As a precautionary measure, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) applied for an appeal to the International Court of Sport (CAS) against the waiver of the proceedings at the end of November 2010 in order to meet the deadline and instructed the DTTB to re-examine the matter. In January 2011 the waiver of the disciplinary procedure was confirmed by an internal committee of the DTTB. NADA and WADA waived a renewed objection, thereby the waiver of the disciplinary procedure was confirmed by the DTTB.
