At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , two table tennis competitions were held for both men and women: individual and team competitions. The venue was Barra da Tijuca , a district of Rio de Janeiro. The game was played in pavilion 3 of the Riocentro exhibition center .
qualification
A total of 172 places were available, 86 for women and 86 for men. 70 active participants each started in the individual competitions, plus 22 active participants for the team competitions.
The following qualification criteria applied to both women and men.
singles
Direct qualification
First of all, an adjusted world ranking was formed from the world ranking list from May 2016 , in which only the two best-placed athletes of a nation were taken over in the world ranking list, the remaining athletes were deleted. Likewise, athletes who had not participated in a qualifying tournament were deleted (this was an innovation compared to previous Olympic qualifications).
The top 22 of this adjusted world rankings were directly qualified. Thus, either two or one or no athletes from one nation were directly qualified.
Qualifying tournaments
A further 40 starting places were allocated through continental qualification tournaments, with a maximum of three athletes from one country per gender being allowed to participate in the games. Each nation was allowed to send at least one and a maximum of three representatives into the qualifying tournaments, depending on how many had qualified directly via the world rankings (3 minus the number of those directly qualified). In these qualifying tournaments, six starting places were awarded for Africa, eleven for Asia, eleven for Europe, six for Latin America, three for North America and three for Oceania.
The winners of the European Games in Baku qualified for Europe in June 2015 , namely Dimitrij Ovtcharov (Germany) and Li Jiao (Netherlands). The remaining 10 places for Europe were determined at a tournament in Istanbul in April 2016.
Wildcards
Another starting place was available for the host country Brazil, a three-way commission was able to award a second wildcard.
criticism
The innovation that players who had actually already qualified due to their world ranking position had to take part in the continental qualifying tournament met with criticism. After all, it was only participation that counted, not performance in these tournaments.
Teams
16 teams of three took part in each of the team competitions. Brazil as the host nation was automatically qualified. First, a team world ranking list was used, from which the best team from one of the six continents (North and South America count separately) with two players qualified for the individual was selected. Furthermore, those nations were eligible to play, two of which were qualified for the individual competitions, again based on the team world ranking.
Competition mode
singles
70 players and 70 female players took part in the individual, with a maximum of two players and two female players from one association. Players from the same association were generally drawn into different halves of the tournament tree. Of these 70 players, the 6 lowest-placed players in the August world rankings competed in a qualifying round against six other low- ranked players on the field. The winners from these six games advanced to the first round, for which the remaining 26 players in the 33-70 seed positions, which had not yet been considered, were directly qualified. These 32 players played 16 games in a first round. The winners advanced to the second round and met the 16 players with seeding positions 17–32, who were directly qualified. There were again 16 games, the winners of which advanced to the 3rd round, where the top 16 players waited. From the third round, which again consisted of 16 games, the normal knockout system continued. The semi-final losers played a bronze game among themselves. Each game was played in the best-of-seven mode and thus consisted of 4 to 7 sets.
The individual competitions took place from August 6th to 11th.
team
16 teams took part in both men and women. They met from the start in the knockout system , the semi-final losers played a game for third place. Each game was played according to the Beijing system and thus consisted of a double and two to four singles. Doubles and singles were played in the best-of-five mode and consisted of 3 to five sets each.
The team competitions took place from August 12th to 17th.

useful information
Five table tennis players carried the flag of their country during the opening ceremony in Rio. In addition to Timo Boll (Germany), these were Ian Lariba (Philippines), Funke Oshonaike (Nigeria), Yoshua Shing (Vanuatu) and Liu Jia (Austria).
The first set in the round of 16 game between Bojan Tokič and Dimitrij Ovtcharov only ended at 33:31, with which the two players set a new world record.
In the more than four-hour round of 16 match between France and the United Kingdom (2: 3), the maximum number of sets (25) was played for the first time in Olympic history, as each single and double was only decided after the fifth set.
The two oldest participants were the Spaniard He Zhiwen (54 years) and the Dutch woman Li Jiao (43 years).
The two youngest participants were the American Kanak Jha (16 years) and Sally Yee (15 years), who played for the Fiji Islands .
Günter Höhne was the only German referee. He was scheduled for the women's final, but he couldn't be used because of the German women's participation in the final.
