Kou Lei (born November 20, 1987 in Beijing ) is a Ukrainian table tennis player of Chinese origin who played in the German Bundesliga from 2016 to 2017 .

Career

Kou Lei came to Ukraine in 2005 and obtained Ukrainian citizenship prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics so he could compete for Ukraine. However, he was eliminated in the first round. In 2008 he also took part in a world championship for the first time and reached place 26 with the team starting in the second division. In 2010, Kou Lei took part in a European championship for the first time and won bronze in doubles. At the World Cup , the team started in the first division, but only reached 21st place and therefore had to compete in the second division again in 2012 . With 25th place, Ukraine was able to climb back into the first division and in 2014 reached 15th place. This year, Kou Lei also made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time . At the 2015 World Cup he made it to the round of 16, where he was eliminated with 2: 4 by Patrick Franziska . At the European Games in Baku he won the bronze medal in singles after a semi-final defeat by Vladimir Samsonov and a victory over Paul Drinkhall . In 2016 he reached 15th place with the Ukrainian team at the World Cup and made it to the last sixteen at the Olympic Games , which he lost to Marcos Freitas . He reached the quarter-finals at the European Championships in 2016 , and came fourth in his first Europe Top 16 participation in 2017 . As a result, he reached a new record with 20th place in the world rankings.

For the 2016/17 season he moved from the French club Roanne LNTT to the German Bundesliga club TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau , for whom he achieved a score of 10:10. In October 2017 he took part in the World Cup for the first time and reached the main round, in which he was eliminated by Dimitrij Ovtcharov . Also due to an injury, he started the 2017/18 Bundesliga season with a 1: 5 record , was able to increase to 6: 8, but was then dismissed when he called in sick for the 10th matchday, but at the same time for one Tournament played in Oman. He also took part in the Europe Top 16 in 2018 and 2019 , but was eliminated in the first round. He was successful again at the European Games , where he finished in 4th place in 2019, placed 33rd.
