The table tennis - World Cup 2017 took place for the men in his 38th host from 20 to 22 October at the Belgian Liege and for the women in his 21 host from 27 to 29 October at the Canadian Markham instead. Gold went to the German Dimitrij Ovtcharov and the Chinese Zhu Yuling .
mode
20 athletes took part in each competition. The eight best-placed participants in the world rankings were automatically qualified for the main round, which was held in the knockout system , the remaining twelve participants were divided into four groups of three athletes each, two of which qualified for the main round. The semi-final losers played a game for third place. Each game was played in best-of-seven mode and thus consisted of four to seven sets.
qualification
The reigning world champion was automatically qualified. Otherwise qualification took place via the Asian Cup, the Europe Top 16 Cup , the African Cup, the Oceania Cup and the Panam Cup. The three first-placed players in the Asian and Europe Cups and the first-placed players in the other tournaments were automatically qualified, and in the Panam Cup, the best-placed player on the continent (North or Latin America) from whom the winner was not from (i.e. the best in the case of a Latin American winner) North American and vice versa). The participants in the other places were determined by comparing the players who had not yet qualified in the respective continental cups, with the player with the best August world rankings taking the next place. In this way, seven more starting places were awarded, the host associations got one more place because none of their players had qualified, and the ITTF also awarded a wildcard .
A maximum of two players per association could take part, which is why the Chinese runners-up in the Asian Cup, Fan Zhendong and Liu Shiwen, did not qualify. The fourth placed received their place. Ding Ning and Petrissa Solja canceled, however, due to the late date, the substitutes were no longer determined by the qualification criteria, but by the ITTF, which decided on Matilda Ekholm and Liu Shiwen, who still got a starting place.

Others
With Quadri Aruna and Omar Assar , two African players were able to qualify for the World Cup for the first time . In 1989 two African players took part because a player from the Kenyan host received a wild card.
For the first time since 1999 , the men's final without Chinese (and Asian) participation, and for the first time ever two Germans were in the final.
With her 12th World Cup participation, Liu Jia drew level with the record holder Tie Yana .
