Koki Niwa ( Japanese 丹羽 孝 希 , Niwa Kōki ; born October 10, 1994 in Tomakomai , Hokkaidō ) is a Japanese table tennis player . With the Japanese team he won, among other things, Olympic and World Cup silver, in doubles with Kenta Matsudaira and Maharu Yoshimura, twice World Cup bronze.

Career

Under the influence of his father, he began to play table tennis during elementary school. At the age of 11 he became the youngest player in the Japanese U18 team. In July 2007 he was listed at number 997 for the first time in the world rankings . In 2008 and 2009 he won bronze in doubles with Kenta Matsudaira at the youth world championship, from 2009 he was also active internationally in the adult field and played his first world championship . In 2010, with double victories at the Japan and Hungarian Open, he won the first gold medals on the Pro Tour and qualified for the Grand Finals. He also won the Youth Olympic Games in singles and as a team and with Matsudaira the World Youth Championship in doubles. At the end of the year he made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. At the Japanese Championship 2010 he won a medal in men's doubles together with Kenta Matsudaira in January 2011, and again at the 2012 tournament, where he also won the men's singles title. In 2011 he became youth world champion and won his first individual medal on the Pro Tour by reaching the semi-finals at the Japan Open. In 2012 he took part in the team competition of the Olympic Games and won bronze with the Japanese team at the World Cup . This year he also made it into the top 20 in the world for the first time and qualified in doubles with Seiya Kishikawa for the Grand Finals, where they won silver. Kōki Niwa also competed for the first time in the individual competition, but retired, just as usually in the years after, in the first round. At the next individual World Cup in 2013 he reached the round of 16 in singles and doubles - now again with Matsudaira. With the Russian Open 2014 he was able to win his first World Tour tournament in singles, at the Team World Cup 2014 in Japan there was again bronze, at the Grand Finals silver in doubles. With a 7th place at the Asian Cup, Niwa was able to qualify for the first time in 2015 for the World Cup , where he reached the quarter-finals, at the World Cup he reached the second round in singles and mixed and won bronze in doubles. From 2016 he formed doubles with Maharu Yoshimura , this year he also won World Cup silver with the Japanese team and qualified not only for the team but also for the individual competition of the Olympic Games . There he reached the quarter-finals in the individual and finished second with the team.

2017 was a successful year: At the Asian Championships, Niwa defeated Xu Xin , among others , and won bronze not only in doubles and team competitions, but also in singles. At the world championship he again won bronze in doubles and after victories reached the individual quarter-finals over Dimitrij Ovtcharov , his best world championship placement to date. As a result, he moved up into the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time. At the World Cup , he made it back to the quarter-finals, and in the November world rankings he was fifth, which was a new record. At the 2018 World Cup , he was part of the Japanese team that started as the reigning runner-up, but surprisingly lost to England in the group stage and South Korea in the quarter-finals and was eliminated without a medal.
