In 2007, Xu Xin took part in a world championship for the first time , where he made it to the second round in doubles. Since 2008 he has been increasingly active internationally, so that in February 2009 he made it into the top 100 of the world rankings . That year he achieved his first international success at the Asian Cup when he was first in doubles with Ma Long , and they took silver at the World Cup . By December, Xu Xin was already in the top 20, and after winning the silver medal at the Pro Tour Grand Finals and winning the Kuwait Open - his first individual gold medal - he moved up to the top 10, which he hasn't since left more. In 2010 he won gold with the team for the first time, and in 2011 he became world champion in doubles. The following year he won the team gold again and took part in the World Cup for the first time , but only finished fourth after defeats against Ma Long and Vladimir Samsonov . For this he won four World Tour tournaments in doubles and three in singles, and he also won the Grand Finals in singles. As a result, he took first place in the world rankings in January 2013 for the first time.
In 2013 he was able to win the Grand Finals again and his first individual World Championship medal through his semi-finals at the World Cup. He also won gold at the World Cup after beating Vladimir Samsonov in the final . In 2014 he didn't celebrate much success in doubles, but won the World Championship for the third time with the team and the Asian Games in singles. He was also number one in the world rankings for twelve months from March 2014 and did not lose a single game against non-Chinese players in 2013 and 2014. At the 2015 World Table Tennis Championships , he competed in all three competitions, was eliminated in singles against Fang Bo in the round of 16 , but won gold in doubles with Zhang Jike and in mixed with Yang Ha-eun . As part of the Chinese team, which won gold in each case, he took part in the 2016 Olympic Games and for the fourth time in the Team World Cup. At the World Cup he lost to Fan Zhendong in the final . In 2017 he beat Lin Gaoyuan in the round of 16 of the World Cup after defending against five match points and Tomokazu Harimoto in the quarter-finals before losing to Ma Long and thus winning bronze. With Fan Zhendong he became double world champion for the third time.
At the China Open in June 2017, Xu Xin, Ma Long and Fan Zhendong boycotted their round of 16 games. This was in protest against the fact that coach Liu Guoliang had been "promoted" to one of 15 vice presidents and had lost his coaching position. On-site spectators expressed their support for Liu Guoliang. The Chinese Ministry of Sports announced consequences. Other Chinese national players also expressed their support on Weibo , but corresponding entries were subsequently deleted. Identical apologies were posted on the players' Weibo pages the next day. The following week, all male Chinese players registered for the Australian Open (including Xu Xin and Fan Zhendong) were canceled. At the end of October, the ITTF sentenced the three boycotting players to a fine of 20,000 dollars each. They had their first international appearances since the China Open between September and November, so that Xu Xin dropped out of the world rankings for a month due to inactivity. In 2018 he became world champion again with the team , in 2019 he became mixed world champion for the second time , although he was surprisingly eliminated in the third round against Simon Gauzy , which meant that for the first time since 2003, not two Chinese made it to the individual final. Nevertheless, in July he reached the top of the world rankings for the first time in over four years after winning gold in singles, doubles and mixed at the Japan Open.
In 2020 he won the first tournament of the World Tour, the German Open, after beating Ma Long in the final .
Private
Xu Xin married the former Chinese table tennis player Yao Yan in 2016 . He has a son with her (* 2019).
