The table tennis World Cup 2016 took place for the men in his 37th host from 1st to 3rd October German Saarbrucken and for the women in its 20th anniversary from 7 to 9 October at the US Philadelphia instead. Gold went to the Chinese Fan Zhendong and the Japanese Miu Hirano .
mode
20 athletes took part in each competition. The eight best-placed participants in the world rankings were automatically qualified for the main round, which was held in the knockout system , the remaining twelve participants were divided into four groups of three athletes each, two of which qualified for the main round. The semi-final losers played a game for third place. Each game was played in best-of-seven mode and thus consisted of four to seven sets.

With 12 World Cup appearances, Tie Yana set a new record for women.
Due to the cancellations of Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen , no Chinese took part in the World Cup for the first time. Miu Hirano managed to become the youngest and first non-Chinese World Cup winner at the age of 16. Fan Zhendong in the men's race also became the youngest World Cup winner at 19 years and 8 months. ( Kong Linghui was the only other player to win gold in 1995 when he was under 20 years of age, and his 20th birthday 3 days later)
