Hugo Calderano (born June 22, 1996 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian table tennis player . The right-hander has been competing for the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen in the Bundesliga since 2014 . He is multiple Latin American champion.
Career
Hugo Calderano has won five Word Junior Circuit tournaments. In 2012 and 2013 he took part in the World Championships, but did not come close to medal ranks. At the age of fifteen, he defeated the Belgian Jean-Michel Saive at the Brazilian Open in 2012 and took silver in doubles. His first individual medal on the World Tour followed in 2013 when he won the Brazilian Open, and at the World Youth Championship in the same year he reached the quarter-finals in singles and doubles.
In 2014 he moved from the Brazilian club Sa Caetano de Sul to the TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen and to the Liebherr Masters College there. The greatest success in the league so far came Calderano with a smooth 3-0 win against Timo Boll, who was more than fifty places in the world rankings before him . In 2014 he also won bronze in the individual at the Youth Olympic Games .
From 2014 to 2016 he won the Latin American Championship three times in a row in singles and with the team, and in 2016 he also won the Latin America Cup, making him the first player to hold both titles at the same time. He also won singles and with the team at the Pan American Games in 2015 and qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he reached the round of 16 in singles, but met South Korea with the team in the first round and was eliminated. In July 2016, in addition to his Brazilian citizenship, thanks to his Portuguese grandfather, he also received Portuguese citizenship, which means that he can be used in European club competitions as an EU citizen.
In his first participation in the World Cup in October, he reached the round of 16, in which he lost to Xu Xin 4-0. Thanks to successes at the Austrian Open, among others, he moved up to 17th place in the world rankings in February 2017, which was a new record. In 2017 he was eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 32 against Xu Xin, was Pan American champion, but did not take part in the Panamerican Cup, so he did not qualify for the World Cup . At the Qatar Open in March 2018, he defeated Timo Boll, Tomokazu Harimoto and Lin Gaoyuan the numbers 1, 12 and 4 in the world rankings - he only gave up one set - and was defeated 0: 4 in the final to the vice-world champion Fan Zhendong , whereby he could not use clear guides and set balls in the first two sets. With the Brazilian team at the 2018 World Cup , he defeated, among other things, vice European champions Portugal and surprisingly reached the quarter-finals, which were lost to Germany . In July he reached a place in the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time, but at the World Cup in October he was eliminated in the group stage. In December, he moved up to 6th place in the world rankings and beat world number one fan Zhendong in the quarter-finals of the Grand Finals , but was then eliminated by Tomokazu Harimoto.
In the 2018/19 season he was German champion and cup winner with TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen . At the 2019 World Cup , he made it to the eighth finals and the quarter-finals at the World Cup .
