successes

Saive has been the best Belgian table tennis player without interruption since 1985. In 1985, 1986 and 1987 he won singles, doubles and mixed competitions at the Belgian national championships. Overall, he was Belgian champion 25 times in singles, at least six times in doubles, at least seven times in mixed and at least 12 times in team competition. In 1984 he was the winner of the European Schools Championship.

He took part in seven Olympic Games from 1988 , when table tennis became an Olympic sport, until 2012 . At the opening ceremonies of the 1996 and 2004 Olympic Games , he was the flag bearer of the Belgian team. Since 1983 he has been represented at all world championships . In 1993 he became vice world champion in singles. In 1994 he led the ITTF world rankings .

Saive joined TTC Jülich in 1983 (2nd team, 2nd Bundesliga) and has since played for several Bundesliga clubs , from 1996 at TTF Bad Honnef and in between in Belgium at Royal Villette Charleroi (from 1997) and in France at club SSSS Tours. In 2012 he left Royal Villette Charleroi and joined the Logis Auderghem association in Brussels.

His international breakthrough came in 1993 when he won the China International Championships. He defeated Ma Wenge 3-2 in the final .

In February 1994 he won the European ranking tournament Europe TOP-12 and thus climbed to the top of the world rankings. A few months later he became individual European champion . In autumn Saive confirmed his supremacy in Europe by winning the European Masters Cup . At the end of the year he reached the final of the World Cup in Malaysia, where he was defeated (as in the 1993 World Cup) against the French Jean-Philippe Gatien .

After the early retirement at the 1995 World Cup in Tianjin, when he failed as top seed, he lost the top position in the world rankings. By winning the Qatar Open in early 1996, he managed to climb to first place in the world rankings again.

In 2001 he won the world championship with his Club Royal Villette Charleroi , was the European Champions League winner and also won the trophy of the Pro Tour single player world championship. He also reached the final at the World Cup in Osaka against China with the Belgian national team.

Saive won a total of 130 medals (51 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze medals).

He was Belgian Sportsman of the Year in 1991 and 1994 and received the UNESCO Fair Play Award in 1988 .

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , Saive was honored next to the athletes Zoran Primorac (CRO) and Jörgen Persson (SWE) for the sixth participation in the Olympic table tennis competition. With this, Jean-Michel Saive had participated in all Olympic Games alongside Primorac and Persson since the table tennis competition was introduced in Seoul in 1988.

In December 2015 he announced the end of his international career, and in 2019 he retired completely from competitive sports.

Private

Saive's parents were very good table tennis players. His father Jean-Paul was 10th in the Belgian rankings in 1971, his mother Jeanine won the Belgian championship in 1969 in doubles B. Saive's younger brother Philippe Saive is also a Belgian TT international.

philately

On June 29, 1996, the Belgian Post issued a stamp for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta with a face value of 16 Francs + 4 Francs surcharge. This stamp depicts Jean-Michel Saive ( Michel catalog no. 2698). This stamp exists in perforated and cut copies as well as a ministerial block. For this purpose a special stamp was used in Brussels on June 29, 1996, on which a table tennis bat, a table tennis ball and a table tennis net are depicted.
