Gábor Gergely [ ˈɡaːbor ˈɡɛrɡɛj ] (born June 21, 1953 in Budapest ) was one of the best table tennis players in the world in the 1970s and 1980s .

Start of career

Gergely initially played football at MTK Budapest , but turned to table tennis at the age of 14 due to a knee injury. He was trained by two-time European champion Péter Rózsás . He changed his initial penholder style to the "normal" stick position. In 1970 he played for the first time in the Hungarian national team, in 1971 he won against Stellan Bengtsson .

Greatest successes

After winning the gold medal in men's doubles with István Jónyer in 1975 , he was also a member of the Hungarian team in 1979 that broke through the years of Chinese dominance in men's table tennis with a 5-1 victory in the final. At the European Championships in Duisburg in 1978 he won 3 titles (men's team, singles, doubles). In the same year he also won the ranking tournament Europe TOP-12 . In 1980 he won with the club BVSC Budapest the European Champions Cup 1979/80, 1975 and 1981 with István Jónyer the Hungarian championship in doubles.

Activities as a senior

1985 Gergely moved to the Austrian state league club Wolkersdorf. Currently (October 2006) he plays in the 1st team of SV Salamander Kornwestheim 1894 in the district class.

Private

Gergely has been married to Eva since 1974. He has two daughters (Barbara and Noemi). In the mid-1990s he was the sports director of the Budapest newspaper Mai Nap . As a TV commentator, he broadcast table tennis competitions.
