European table tennis championship 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 12th European table tennis championship took place from March 5th to 13th, 1980 in Bern in the Allmend ice rink .

The most successful this time was the USSR, whose women secured three gold medals: the women's team, Valentina Popová in the singles and Narine Antonyan / Valentina Popová in the women doubles. Sweden won the men's team competition, England's John Hilton in singles and French Jacques Secrétin / Patrick Birocheau won doubles. Milan Orlowski / Ilona Uhlíková from the ČSSR won the mixed competition .

The German men's team finished second behind Sweden, Engelbert Hüging and Ursula Kamizuru reached the quarter-finals in the individual competitions.

The men's singles final was disappointing. This is where the surprise finalists John Hilton and Josef Dvořáček met . While Dvořáček had a favorable draw, John Hilton beat last year's winners Gergely and Secrétin in games that were well worth seeing with an offensive style of play that was untypical for the racket material. The final, on the other hand, was "impossible to see" (Winfried Stöckmann), as Dvořáček, completely overwhelmed, made more mistakes than rallies. The Hungarians who were so successful at the last European Championships did not win a gold medal this time.

For the first time, representatives of all ETTU member associations took part in a European championship apart from the GDR .

Competition mode teams

A total of 31 men's and 29 women's teams took part.

The mode of competition for the teams was the same as at the previous European Championship in 1978 . For both women and men, the top 12 of the last European Championships in 1978 competed in category 1 in groups of six, A and B, where they played for the title. The remaining nations were also divided into two groups in Category 2.

Similar to the pair cross system (without doubles), the first and second of groups A and B played places 1 to 4, the third and fourth places 5 to 8, and the fifth and sixth places 9 to 12.

The first of the remaining groups fought each against each other for places 13 to 17 for men or for places 13 to 16 for women, the second for places 18 to 22 for men or places 17 up to 20 for women, etc.

A team fight was held for the men according to the Swaythling Cup system in teams of three , i.e. H. Each against each other without doubles. The women played according to the Corbillon Cup system for teams of two .
