Istvan Korpa

Istvan Korpa ( Serbian Иштван Корпа , born December 24, 1945 in Senta , Serbia ) is a former Yugoslav table tennis player . In 1962 he was European team champion , from 1979 to 2008 he was the national coach of the German Table Tennis Association DTTB.

Korpa started playing table tennis when she was nine years old. In the 1960s he was one of the world's best table tennis players. At the Yugoslav championships he won 16 titles, 6 of them in singles. In the junior division he won the European championship several times , namely in Bled in 1962 in doubles with Edvard Vecko and with the team and in Duisburg in 1963 in singles and with the team.

For men, he took part in all six European championships between 1962 and 1972. In 1962 he was second in doubles with Edvard Vecko and European men's championship with the Yugoslav team. In this team competition, Yugoslavia finished second in 1964, 1970 and 1972. In 1970 he made it to the singles final and lost it to Hans Alser .

From 1963 to 1973 Korpa was represented at all six world championships . He won the bronze medal with the Yugoslav team in 1969 and 1971 . In 1973 he moved to FTG Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga , in 1977/78 he played for Eintracht Frankfurt .

Korpa has been called up to the Yugoslav national team more than 250 times. In 1970 he was ranked 6th in the world rankings of the ITTF .

Trainer

In 1973 Korpa moved with his family to Germany where he was employed as a consultant for a table tennis company. Since 1975 he worked for the DTTB as a trainer. Initially he was assistant coach for the national team for women and men. In 1979 he became national coach for the men (assisted by Jochen Leiß and Klaus Schmittinger ), with whom he finished second at the 1980 European Championships. From 1983 he was national coach for the women, from 1991 for the boys. Here he won the European championship for teams in 1995 with the German students. He repeated this success in 1996, 1997 and 1998 with the German boys team, in 2000 they reached 3rd place.

From October 2000 to 2004 he trained again for the German men's national team. With this he won the European league in 2001 and took second place at the European championships in 2002 and 2003 and at the team world championship in 2004 .

After the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, he switched from the men to the male youth national team, which he was in charge of until the end of 2008. Under his direction, the Germans won three individual medals at the 2005 European Championships. Patrick Baum's singles title at the 2005 World Youth Championships also falls under his direction.

The Association of German Table Tennis Trainers recognized VDTT Korpa as Trainer of the Year 1998 and Trainer of the Year 2009 for his services.

Private

Korpa graduated from high school. He is married to the former Yugoslav national player Cirila Pirc (born March 23, 1943), who played in the major league with FTG Frankfurt in the mid-1970s . He has two children, a son and a daughter. Korpa currently lives in Meerholz in Hessen.

Korpa's cousin Erzebet Korpa took part in two world championships for Yugoslavia.
