Klaus Schmittinger

Klaus Schmittinger (born August 16, 1950 in Kirchberg (Hunsrück) ) is a former German table tennis player . After the end of his active career, he worked as a national coach.

Active career

Schmittinger began his career in 1962 at TuS Kirchberg and was part of the men's team that rose to the 2nd Southwest Table Tennis League in 1967. In 1968 Klaus Schmittinger became German youth champion in singles and in mixed with Brigitte Scharmacher , in doubles he reached the final with Lothar Koch. In 1969 Schmittinger moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in the table tennis Bundesliga , where he had the best record in the upper pair cross in 1970/71 with 30: 5 and 1973/74 with 28: 7. In the 1970s, Klaus Schmittinger was one of the top players in Hessen. From 1972 to 1979 he was seven times Hessen champion.

In 1977 and 1978 Schmittinger was runner-up in the German table tennis championship in the individual. In the double competition, he failed twice in the final against Lieck / Ness , in 1972 with Günter Köcher and 1973 with Jochen Leiß . Thereafter, Klaus Schmittinger and Leiß became German champions three times in a row from 1974 to 1976. With Agnes Simon he won the mixed title in 1972. In the national ranking tournament Schmittinger came in 1973 to second place.

From 1969 to 1974, Klaus Schmittinger played 40 international matches. He was nominated three times for table tennis world championships . At the 1969 World Table Tennis Championships , Schmittinger only competed in individual competitions. At the table tennis world championship in 1971 he reached the round of 16 both in doubles with Bernt Jansen and in mixed with Marta Hejma . With the men's team, Klaus Schmittinger took 9th place at the 1973 World Table Tennis Championships .

At the European table tennis championships , Klaus Schmittinger was represented in individual competitions in 1970, 1972 and 1974 as well as 1978.

His best place in the national German rankings was 4th place, from 1971 to 1974.

In 1980 Schmittinger ended his active career.

National coach

Schmittinger has been a national trainer for the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) since 1979 . He trained the students until 1983, and in 1980 he also took over the women's division. From 1983 to 1996 he was active in the men's area. Then he received special tasks: talent scouting and training. From 2004 he was again responsible for the pupils, whose boys' team won the European championship in 2004. He retired at the end of 2015. His successor as the boys' national coach was Zhu Xiaoyong.

Private

Schmittinger is married to his wife Bärbel geb. Kemper (* 1953), who worked in the office of the Hessian Table Tennis Association in the 1970s . With her he has a daughter (* 1984) and a son.
