Günter Köcher

Günter "Kö" Köcher (born March 26, 1948 in Ortenberg (Hesse) ; † January 2020) was a German table tennis player and official. He was German runner-up in doubles and a participant in a world championship.

Köcher gained his first international experience at the youth competition in December 1963 in Lille, France. In 1964 he won the German youth championship in doubles with Horst Giehsel. A year later, the two defended the title. In 1967 he won with the Hessian selection Germany Cup .

In 1966 he took part in the European championship in individual competitions. In 1969 he won bronze at the national German men's championship in mixed with Christa Rühl . This year he was nominated by the DTTB for the individual competitions of the World Championships in Munich. He formed a strong double with Klaus Schmittinger , with whom he was fourth in the German championship in 1971 and runner-up in 1972.

His most successful year was 1971, when he took 3rd place in the German championship and 2nd place in the DTTB ranking tournament TOP-12. That year he was ranked 5th in the national ranking. So he was disappointed that he was not included in the 1971 World Cup.

Between 1966 and 1971, Köcher played three international matches. In his first use in Bad Homburg in October 1966 against Hungary, he lost both singles. Until 1967 he played in the club PPC Neu Isenburg. He then played with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga until 1978 , before returning to PPC Neu Isenburg.

In 1972, Köcher gave up his post as a postman. Since then he has worked as a youth secretary at the German Table Tennis Association DTTB . He supervised courses and tournaments for the youngsters. In March 2009, Quiver suffered a stroke. Since then he has not been able to pursue his professional activity and was therefore officially adopted by the DTTB in May 2010. He died in January 2020 at the age of 71.

Private

Köcher was married to Irma Köcher and had two sons. He suffered a stroke in March 2009 and has been in early retirement since 2010.
