German table tennis championship
The National German Table Tennis Championships (TT-DM) are held annually. Germans who are registered by the regional associations are eligible to play. Foreigners who have belonged to a German association for at least three years may also be registered.
history
The first attempts at a German championship were already there in 1907, when the Berlin Sports Club in 1905 (formerly Ping-Pong Club 1905) held a tournament in the Nollendorf Casino in Berlin with the men's and women's singles competitions. It was called "American" to avoid patent problems with the name ping-pong. Another approach to German championships took place in 1925, then called the Bundesspiele . From 1930/31 these national games were held regularly, since 1932 under the official name of the National German Championships . Due to the war, they were suspended in 1945 and 1946. From 1949 to 1990, the GDR held its own championships. However, the GDR players could take part in the all-German championships up to and including 1954 . Until then, the following participant quota applied according to the number of active participants:
- Two thirds from West Germany ( DTTB )
- One third from the GDR (table tennis section)
- In the event of participation, the Saarland could nominate four men and two women.
At the end of 1954, the GDR demanded a 50:50 quota because it was a sovereign state. When this was rejected by the German Table Tennis Sport Working Committee, the GDR no longer took part in the all-German championships.
Since 1981 there has been a challenge cup for the individual winners, donated by Eberhard Schöler for the men and Agnes Simon for the women.
Competition mode
Until 1992
Until 1992 the single and double competitions were held in the knockout system .
From 1994
In 1994 the participants were sorted according to the ranking list and divided into three categories: Category I consisted of the top 16 players, Category II consisted of positions 17 to 32 and Category III of positions 33 to 64. In the first round, only category III players competed against each other on. The 16 winners made it to round 2, where the category II players started. Category I players started in Round 3 along with the winners from Round 2.
With the introduction of the categories, the aim was to avoid the number of one-sided games between opponents with very different levels of play and also to allow the weaker players to play more games. This system has already been tried out at the West German Championships.
From 2007
Since the DM 2007, individual preliminary rounds have been held in groups of four in the "everyone against everyone" mode. There were three sets of wins. The first two players qualified for the main round, for which the sixteen best players of both sexes have already qualified. The mixed competition was canceled.
From 2019
The mixed was reintroduced.
From 2020
The field of participants is reduced. Instead of the previous 48 women and men, only 32 women and men are now at the start. In addition, the tournament duration will be shortened from three to two days.
Overview of the German individual championships
Most of the individual titles have been won so far (2019) by Timo Boll (13) in front of Eberhard Schöler (9) and Conny Freundorfer (9) as well as Nicole Struse (9) in front of Hilde Bussmann (7) and Gertrude Pritzi (7th) ). The most medals overall - taking into account all disciplines - was won by Wilfried Lieck , namely 23 between 1965 and 1987. Kristin Lang holds the record for women with 26 medals.

- ↑ The first names of the women Berg and Markmann are not known. The magazine “Tennis und Golf”, born in 1931, only writes Miss Berg - Frankfurt and Miss Markmann - Magdeburg on page 220 . On page 7 it is mentioned that Miss Berg comes from the Main District. Thus Frankfurt am Main is obviously the place of residence.
