Edith Lersow

Edith Lersow (born October 10, 1938 in Berlin ; † March 24, 2012 ) was a German table tennis player . At the European Championships in 1962 she reached the quarter-finals. She was also an international referee in table tennis.

Table tennis player

Edith Lersow began playing table tennis in 1955. She joined the association BSV 1892 Berlin. Since the women's team disbanded in 1959, she moved to Grün-Weiß Berlin. When the team was relegated from the league in 1966, Edith Lersow returned to the BSV. Several times she was Berlin champion in singles, doubles and mixed, for the first time in 1962 in singles. In 1963/64 she took first place in the Berlin ranking. She also won several titles at North German championships. In 1975 she was honored because she had been represented at all North German championships since 1960.

Edith Lersow achieved her greatest successes as an active player in double competitions. In 1965 she won the German championship together with Jutta Trapp . In 1960 she had already become German runner-up with Anita Haacke (Brauns). With Ursel Fiedler she finished 4th in 1962. Her best placement in the individual was 4th in 1961.

At the European Championships in 1962 , she came to the quarterfinals with the Englishwoman Margaret (Peggy) Piper in doubles. In the individual, she survived the first round.

In later years she played successfully at senior championships. She won the doubles title at the German championships in 1980 (with Anita Brauns) and singles in 1981.

Because of her successes, Edith Lersow was awarded the Silver Badge of Honor by the Berlin Table Tennis Association in 1976.

Referee

After the end of her career as a competitive athlete, Edith Lersow became a referee . Since 1989 she was a member of the Berlin referee committee. She qualified as an international referee and was regularly used in matches in the 1st women's Bundesliga and the 2nd men's Bundesliga. In addition, there are appointments to several international women's matches, five German Open , two world championships, one European championship and several events abroad.

Edith Lersow died on March 24, 2012, she was buried in the Schmargendorf cemetery.
