European table tennis championship 1962

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 3rd European table tennis championship took place from March 31 to April 7, 1962 in West Berlin in the Schöneberg sports hall. It was boycotted by almost all Eastern Bloc countries for political reasons.

The German women's team became European champions, as did Agnes Simon in the individual. Yugoslavia won the men's title, the Swede Hans Alsér in the men's singles ahead of Erich Arndt . Inge Harst won the mixed competition.

Apron

Sweden was originally intended to host the European Championship. When Sweden renounced, the German Table Tennis Association DTTB was commissioned in 1961 to host the 1962 European Championships. This set West Berlin as the venue. The GDR protested against this, and all Eastern European countries announced a boycott of the event. The President of the USSR Table Tennis Association spoke of a provocation and political challenge . At a meeting of the European table tennis association ETTU in Prague, those involved confirmed the DTTB's decision regarding West Berlin with a 5-2 majority.

Therefore the GDR, Hungary, the CSSR, Romania and the USSR boycotted the tournament on the grounds that West Berlin does not belong to the Federal Republic. Yugoslavia did not participate in the boycott. Italy canceled the planned participation at short notice for other reasons.

Agnes Simon was only allowed to play for Germany shortly before the start of the European Championship.

Competition mode teams

The men's teams competed in two groups of nine in the mode everyone against everyone. The group winners contested the final. The game was played with teams of three according to the Swaythling Cup system , i.e. without doubles.

Similarly, the women played in a group of seven and a group of six in the mode everyone against everyone. A women's team consisted of two players. The game was played according to the Corbillon Cup system , i.e. first two singles, then one double and then again a maximum of two singles.
