Georges Roland

Georges Roland (* 1922 ; † October 26, 1991 ) was a Belgian national table tennis player and trainer as well as an astronomer .

He participated in six world championships in the 1940s and 1950s . In 1956 he discovered the comet C / 1956 R1 (Arend-Roland) .

Career

At the Belgian national championships, Georges Roland won a total of 15 titles, in 1954, 1956 and 1957 he was Belgian champion in the individual. From 1948 to 1959 he took part in six world championships , but never came close to medal ranks. He was also nominated for three European championships . Here he won bronze in doubles with Walter Dugardin in 1960 .

After the end of his career as a competitive athlete, he worked as a national coach for 29 years. He also worked as a functionary at the world association ITTF and the European association ETTU . In 1991, Georges Roland received the ITTF Merit Award for his services within the Belgian table tennis association .

On November 8, 1956, together with the Belgian astronomer Arend , he discovered comet C / 1956 R1 (Arend-Roland) .

Private

Georges Roland was married to the Belgian table tennis player Ghislaine Roland, with whom he published the brochure Le tennis de table in 1961 .
