motive

The idea for an ETTU came up in Tokyo in 1956 . A year later, the International Table Tennis Federation ITTF decided to only hold the table tennis world championships every two years. Therefore one could organize a European championship in the “years in between” .

Founding members in 1957 were Belgium , the Federal Republic of Germany , Bulgaria , Czechoslovakia , the German Democratic Republic , Finland , France , Yugoslavia , Luxembourg , the Netherlands , Austria , Portugal , Spain , Sweden , the Soviet Union , Hungary and Wales . Jean Bélot (France) became the first president . Jupp Schlaf (Federal Republic of Germany) also belonged to the board at that time .

In 1958 the first European championship was held in Budapest . The organization was restructured at the ETTU congress during the European Championship in 1960. The president, vice-president and a secretary form the executive board, which is supported by five assessors. The following were elected:

In April 1990, Israel joined the ETTU as a member. An application made in 1970 was rejected by the world association ITTF .
