European Cup (table tennis)
The European Cup or European Cup of National Champions (officially ECCC - European Club Cup of Champions ) was a European table tennis competition for club teams. It was carried out annually by the European table tennis association ETTU for women's and men's teams.
execution
The current national team champions of the ETTU member associations and the European Cup winners of the previous season were eligible to play. In the 1960/61 season the competition was held for the first time for men and three years later for women. From 1994/95 onwards, the final was played in the "best of three" mode: If a team wins the first leg and loses the second leg, a play-off is scheduled.
In 2001 the European Cup was replaced by the successor event, the Champions League .
Trends
In the early years mostly Eastern European teams dominated the competition, for men until the end of the 1970s, for women - here in particular the Hungarian club Statisztika Budapest - until the end of the 1980s. Those in the know attributed this to the targeted promotion of table tennis in the east, the players had optimal training opportunities and good coaches available. Later, more and more Western European teams, very often German, won the cup. The reason given is increasing professionalism: sponsors have been won, top foreign players have been hired.
In 1986 the ETTU Congress decided that no more than one foreigner may be used in a team.
