from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SV Moltkeplatz Essen - often also called SVM Essen - is a table tennis club from Essen . The men's team was one of the strongest German teams in the 1960s and was German runner-up four times.

Career

The association was founded in 1923 at Moltkeplatz in Essen. In 1953 the table tennis division was re-established. With the help of several players from the TTF Rellinghausen, the men's team rose to the upper league in 1962 - at that time the highest German division - (Hans Neuhaus, Klaus Solka , Walter Dahlmann , Willy Schulte-Zweckel, Heinz Schuck).

In the 1964/65 season she became German runner-up for the first time when she drew 8-8 in the final against DJK TuSA 08 Düsseldorf , but lost due to the worse set ratio of 20:21. A year later, the team was again in the final and defeated VfL Osnabrück 6: 9. As champions of the Oberliga West, Essen was automatically qualified for the newly founded table tennis Bundesliga in 1966 . Here Wilfried Lieck , Klaus Solka , Walter Dahlmann , Hans Neuhaus, Klemens Tietmeyer , Helmut Hoiczyk, Herbert Seppi and Günter Angenendt took second place behind DJK TuSA 08 Düsseldorf in the first season. The fourth runner-up took place in 1968/69 behind Borussia Düsseldorf . In 1967/68 the team won the German Cup with the line-up of Wilfried Lieck, Klaus Solka and Walter Dahlmann.

In 1970, the team rose from the Bundesliga to the league. 1978/79 she played again in the 1st Bundesliga.

Hans Lorrek (* 1920; † 1990), who was one of the founders in 1953 and headed the department until June 1983, was closely linked to the success of the association.

Today (March 2020) the men's teams play in the lower classes. On July 1, 2020, SV Moltkeplatz Essen merged with the neighboring club DJK Franz Sales Haus.
